As the bit begins to penetrate the metal, you can reverse the bit rotation. This dramatically slows the cutting, but can also increase the heat, which may affect the paint. Also, for really touchy stuff, I have sometimes stopped drilling at this point, and put a small, tapered grinding bit into the chuck. Again slow, but with less heat, and the finished hole is a lot less jagged.
