When I googled it the only article I found about the subject was 10 years old. Every other result that had anything to do with it was from a forum.

Well, The Strat-SG looks like a 60s Boutique guitar from Kay or some other company. That pickguard is pretty bad though, It doesn't fit in. And the red pickup covers? WHOA. I wouldn't mind playing one though, It wouldn't be my favorite guitar but I could get along with it well enough after modification. And as for the Explorer, Meh. I don't like regular Explorers in the first place. It would be better if it wasn't made out of spiderwebs, I think they could have done much better making it a "Tone Chambered" Body.

The red Strat-SG is known as the 'Eye Guitar' but I have no clue as to how it got that name.
Short for eye-sore maybe?

In marketing, what Gibson appears to be doing is known as throwing everything possible at the wall, and seeing if anything sticks.

They have probably gone as far as they can reproducing old designs and are evidently unsure of what might attract new buyers.

They might be wise to look at an old-time but still innovative acoustic guitar maker for guidance.

What CF Martin, also in the peculiar position of having their old guitars as their biggest competitors for sales dollars, did was to ask highly regarded guitar players to design their "dream Martin," and then offer limited editions of those to the public.

At the same time, though, Martin is working like crazy to develop new technology and materials to make super-consistent and cost-effective ways to make modern guitars at a lower price.

Smart strategy, that. I bet it works. CFM IV ain't nobody's fool, and he works like a fiend to make sure his company thrives and survives.

Well I finally got to see an actual Zoot Suit SG today and I have to disagree with my friend who told me they didn't look too bad up close.
As we say here: it looks pretty crook to me.

Whatever they've been smoking over at Gibson, I think they got righteously burned... :?

While I personally dislike everything that Gibson has done in their recent past, I wonder if this is going to be the future of the industry in general. Make a run of guitars in limited numbers and see what happens. Either they become collector's items or they take off and become the next big thing.

I wonder what people were saying about the original Explorer, Moderne and Flying V was when they were released.

Take away the pickguard on the top one and you have your self a cool looking guitar. heck, slap a bigsby on it and maybe some binding.
You can keep the other one
