Are you by chance referring to the the 'SOLO" INSIDE the tune itself???
make the Mos' of it, choose the 'rite stuff.

Hey Don, at around 1:22 one can clearly see how the player changes the position of his pickin' hand in order to pick the strings from behind the bridge.
Sure, only 6 notes from 6 strings now, but most of the notes from this famous part of the solo are produced by the fingers of the left hand on the fingerboard -where all the notes of choice (including bends) are available of course.
Yes, the amp needs to be cranked up at this stage and/or the other players in the band need to pipe down a bit (and they do!) so that this piece of artful playing comes through loud enough for the audience to be able to hear. The chap in this video -who seems to know what he is doing- produces almost exactly the same sounds that Nokie did so famously during The Ventures' 1965 live concerts in Japan.

Anybody can get all kinds of notes by using one's 'fingerboard hand' only when used in a certain way (tapping?) and some talented players even use both hands doing this –there is a name for this style but I have forgotten (famenco?) Here's what I read in The Ventures Book on page 119:

"The boys [edit: Narumo-san and Tsutsumi-san] also wondered about Nokie's strange sounding "behind the bridge" solo in "Bulldog". Nokie related having first used the technique to open Pink Panther and War of The Satellites, explaining how this only worked well on a Mosrite guitar with it’s specially designed tailpiece"

Perhaps Nokie was trying to 'accommodate' you because of your Mustang...or protecting his 'secret' at the time? :?

All that I can say is that the trick works as I was shown. It doesn't require a volume adjustment, and I have used it successfully for the past 40 years on many different guitars. If there is a trick involved, it would be the weight of the pick required to attack the string just right.
