Re: What are you listening to?
Just got in from a kid's 2nd b-day party, yeah, I know how to party! Anyway, somehow we got to talking about X, then it turned into trying to make a list of the top 20 American bands, NOT artists, NOT solo singers, but BANDS, that played their instruments, wrote their own songs, and put out at least 2 consistently great records, not singles, ALBUMS. We came up seriously short, but it was funny that The Ventures and The Ramones made the list and I'm pretty sure we didn't even hit 10. Keep in mind, there is NO including The Rolling Stones or Beatles in that list as they were and are not American. The Sonics kinda made the list, or at least honorable mention, but they didn't quite fit the criteria, yeah, a few great records and they were AWESOME but still mostly a cover band. It was also interesting that a ton of the bands we talked about were British and influenced by American artists, ya know, Hank Williams, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly, and THAT list goes on, including all the GREAT old blues fellas. I thought it was awesome how X covered all bases, country, harmonies, lyrics, punk, blues, rockabilly, and AMAZING guitar playing. Keep in mind what was going on with radio stations then which has only gotten worse today. To me, yes, I am a bit biased, that band ages like wine. With every year of listening to them I am always discovering something else they were doing. They put all the best influences together in such a great way and the timing couldn't have been better which proves that some people will just never get it. Add to that, they put out a country record as The Knitters, yeah, I guess I am a yung 'un at 39, but that record from '85 was way better than any country that was happening at the time. I am a country music lover but for the most part good country was done by the early 70s. That record sealed the deal for me with country, yeah, I loved Hank and Johnny, but that was what got me into Merle and learning more about Ernest Tubb, Hank Snow, Faron Young, Webb Pierce, etc. and Billy Zoom got me into so much other stuff, AAAAH, Cliff Gallup, I didn't even need Billy to get me into that!
AHHH, ok, enough outta me, what I am listening to is La Peste, 70s band from Boston, first round of the word I hate, p-u-n-k, but they were on it in '76, barely learned their instruments and it was the 70s, cut their teeth, gigged out like mad, got tight, wrote some great songs!!! The good old days when you could make a living playing five 45 minute sets, 4 nights a week. Just ask Twango the Clown, he was there for all of that stuff!!!
Thank you, and good night!!!

Re: What are you listening to?
The next time I am at a kid's b-day party feel free to remind me to go heavier on the cake and lighter on the Guinness. While you're at it feel free to remind me not to post here. Anyway, this evening's playlist so far has been a lil' Duane Eddy, Bob Luman, Johnny Kidd, Bobby Fuller Four, and the Good Girls Gone Bad compilation to name a few.
