The New Pornographers (Yes, They are a real band)

Postby 101Volts » Mon May 18, 2009 8:54 pm

I thought I would share with you one of my favorite bands. The New Pornographers are an eight member band and their sound differs from album to album.

Most members also have solo careers or their own bands while they're not touring together. I haven't even checked their other work out yet, I just have the four albums they have released as The New Pornographers. With all of their albums put together the seven out of eight members who play in other bands have over 35 albums  (I couldn't even access all of their discography!)

Now, I suppose you're all wondering what they sound like. I will post one song per album, From their oldest album to their newest. If you start listening to the songs in the order I posted them, Don't watch the videos just yet, Just listen. Unless you're watching the Myriad Harbour video.

Letter From An Occupant (Mass Romatic, 2000)

Electric Version (Electric Version, 2003)

Sing Me Spanish Techno (Twin Cinema, 2005)

Myriad Harbour (Challengers, 2007)

1966 Ventures II (German Carved, B670.)
1970s "Not a Blues Bender" Bodies: 2.
1976 Brass Rail Deluxe #10.
2013 Fender Pawn Shop Bass VI.

The New Pornographers have a new album coming out this May, Titled "Together". They'll be touring England and a new song has been released to download for free. The song is "Your Hands (Together)". You can listen to it and download it here.

And by the way, I have to say that no matter how much I listen to their music and how exhausted I may become of it I always hear magic in it again after I take a break. It is rare for any band to have that effect yet The New Pornographers manage to do it in so many of their songs. It is amazing.

Ok, I'm gonna have to give these guys one more try. I've been having people rave to me about them for years and what little I heard didn't quite do it for me. I did like some of the stuff you posted a bit better and I am a fan of Neko Case, at least the older stuff when she did more covers. I have a tenor guitar that someone built for her and never wound up selling to her. It's a real cool looking green Wilshire copy.

That's real cool Eltuce. Yeah, The New Pornographers do take time to like. It took me a month and a half to really like them but part of that is because at the time I was into lots of songs that pumped adrenaline and The New Pornographers don't really have that. (I don't miss constantly listening to adrenaline pumping songs) I like Neko's solo songs too, Fox Confessor is a great album.

Here's one of my favorite New Pornographers songs - The End Of Medicine. Short and the end solo adds to the song so well.

Cool, thanks. I think I need to learn some more patience as I'm getting older. I've definitely slowed down on the adrenaline pumping music a tad. 10 years of working in a music warehouse was great on one hand but on the other not so good. 8-10 hours a day of listening to everyone's music eventually took it's toll and came close to ruining some things that I really love. Gee whiz, don't I sound like a fuddy duddy?

I went to see them live on the 13th. Once they came on stage I enjoyed every moment of the show, Every song was great and I sang to every song they played. When they played "The Bleeding Heart Show" Towards the end of the song there were a lot of people singing along, Its a moment to remember. They were called out for an encore at the end and they played three songs, One which I "called" (I think they were going to play it anyway and Carl just humored me) After the concert was over I talked to Kathryn, I gave compliments and said how far I'd traveled to get there. Kathryn seems like a nice person. I then went, Bought a T Shirt, A Live CD and a Dodos CD (The Dodos were one of the opening acts) And got a few freebies before leaving. I think I was the last attendee to leave the building as I was escorted out and nobody else was going out of the building with me. If you get the opportunity to see them live, Go see them. They truly are one of the best current bands and I don't say that lightly.
