Actually, a piano is an excellent way to start off on any musical instrument I would think; many famous guitar players can play the piano too. (Hank Marvin of the Shadows, for instance) Unfortunately I can't play piano, can't read music and am still in a learning process with the guitar... 
Perhaps our music teachers here may want to share their opinions...
