Hey--

I wish I could find the Thom Bresh video that has him telling a story about the young man who asked Merle Travis what kind of strings he used on his guitar. It is instructive regarding the recent thread we had here on what constitutes a player's sound.

Anyway, I can't remember Bresh's anecdote word for word, but evidently Travis was astonished at the young man's question, and answered, "Why, Son; I use guitar strings."

As they walked away, Travis said to Bresh that he considered that an idiotic question. Bresh explained that the young man admired Travis' sound and style, and wanted to use the same kind of strings so he could get closer himself to that sound. And Travis said something like, "Well, that's still crazy because the sound ain't in the strings, it's in the fingers."

I probably didn't tell that story exactly right, but that's the gist of it.
