Earthquake in Japan
A major earthquake just struck the Tokyo area - 8.8 magnitude. I hope all of our family and friends in Japan are ok.

Re: Earthquake in Japan
MSNBC is saying this is the worst natural disaster in history.
Well wishes for the folks in Japan.
The Tsunami waves should be working their way down the California coast as I post this. Hopefully the effect will be negligible for all you west coast folks who live near the beach.

The Earth is in turmoil...my thoughts go out to the Japanese people at this time. Every newsmedia is covering the events...very disturbing and hard-to-believe images...

That's good news!
Unfortunately the overall news remains gloomy as the reports of devastation keep coming in.

Re: Earthquake in Japan
I just checked the global earthquakes website, and there have been 162 earthquakes in that vicinity since the first pre-quake...the aftershocks range from 7.1 to a low of 5.0. Let's all send our prayers out to these people...
If you want to check it out, here is the website http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/

From Adam:
Family and Friends -
I apologize for the mass mailing but it's the easiest way to respond to all of your emails.
I'm sure by now your local news resources have illustrated the devastation in Sendai and Fukushima, roughly two hundred miles to the northeast of Tokyo. Tokyo has weathered the earthquake inconvenienced but relatively unscathed. Trains have resumed but highways and ports are closed, phone connections are spotty, gas stations and stores are sold out, and planned power outages are scheduled to begin tomorrow. Tsunami warnings for Tokyo's rivers and coastline have been downgraded, but we are still experiences consistent aftershocks (once every hour or so) that will continue for the next week and probably not peter out completely for a month or two. That being said, other than slightly interrupted utilities and transportation, broken glass and tiles shaken off buildings, Tokyo is in good shape. Northeast Japan is not.
I appreciate all of your notes of concern, and other than the occasional quake, Tokyo is basically back to normal. Of course, we are all waiting to see how the catastrophes to the north will play out.
Gratefully,
Adam
