Yes, I do think about things other than guitars!

I have a 16 year old daughter and 12 year old son. They both go to a private school and though it's been a huge financial commitment and huge financial burden, I think it's been worth it. They are both incredibly balanced gentle people and for that I'm grateful. My son is particularly gifted in math and science; and does well in all subjects. A couple of days we found out that in the fall instead of beginning 7th grade he will skip it and start 8th grade except for Math in which he will be in 9th grade. Needless to say I am very, very proud of him.

My personal feelings regarding grade skipping are mixed. It may cause your son to lose friends that didn't get double promoted, or it may make it harder for him to fit in with the older peer group. Keep an eye on him and discuss what he's feeling as he is thrown into the new mix of old and new.

And on a side note, Sarah watch your mailbox. There's a package coming your way.

Hi, Sarah--

I'm afraid I have to come down with Mr. Bill on this one. I skipped a grade in elementary school and CLEPed out of two years of college, and, if I had to do it over again, I would not.

It puts too much pressure on the kid involved. Not just academic pressure; there are other kinds.

Thank you all. I am very proud of him and to be honest I do have reservations and concerns. The good thing about the private school that they attend he will NOT be separated from his friends. They assured us that he will still be in the same class room as his contemporaries, just doing different work from different books. It will put an extra burden on the teacher but they seem all for it and ready, willing, and able to support him. Actually, it's a small school and the entire school population is proud of him and very supportive. It's a different school, to be sure. He's taking it all in stride, actually.

Super, and congrats to the kids. I, too, was double promoted in elementary school, and it didn't seem to scar me too much. Kids are resilient, and it sounds like you've done a good job - the key is that you care enough to be involved. Lots of kids don't have that advantage. Keep up the good work.

Nice to have a mother backing up and supporting her kids the way you do, Sarah. Congratulations to you all. I have one kid only; he is 19 and studying Economics now, after graduating from school. I have been looking after and taking care of his dog for nearly 10 years now which is an insignificant contribution on my part towards his education. I am very thankful that he is doing so well considering his parents have been separated since age 13. Investing in your kids' (future) is the best thing to do -keep it up
