Mark V Truss Rod Problem

Postby yearofthezombie » Mon Jun 10, 2013 5:30 pm

So, I recently acquired this Mark V and it needs a slight amount of truss adjustment. The problem is the truss bolt is lying flat against(or extremely near) the access area and I can't get a socket around it. I've tried several different types and there's just not enough space.

Anyone have this problem? Here's a pic of the guitar and the truss rod access hole.

Hi there,
I've had the same problem with my '65 Ventures II – the trussrod nut bends the thread area when tightened. What I did was to invent that great special tool pictured here ;) Just get a cheap wrench socket (6mm for my guitar's nut) and file away the right section. You will be able to get the socket over the nut and to turn it CAREFULLY...

Hope that helps,
cheers,
Max

They make "thin walled sockets" you might also be able to find a nut driver that's thin enough to fit in there. The picture I posted doesn't have this, but some nut drivers have a "collar" near the handle that you can fit a wrench on if you need extra leverage.

Maybe one of the others here will know for sure if this is a removable rod or not, if it is you can loosen the strings to take the tension off of the rod and see if the adjustment nut moves away from the wall of the pocket.

If you can loosen the truss rod nut, you can then try to pull out the rod a bit and see if it opens up the space enough to use a normal socket.

You can also use a Dremel tool to remove a bit of the wood around the nut 'til you can get a socket on there.

put 1 very small drop of penetrating oil on the end of the threads . DONT GET IT ON THE WOOD. Wait a day , then turn it, cheap insurance..................................

The rod is removeable, but only if it's not under tension – removing the strings will not change the nut situation, same with the penetrationg oil. I would NOT recommend to Dremel away some wood if you can Dremel away a bit of a wrench socket's metal ;)
The problem with those trussrods is the weak guidance of the top part of the rod – Mosrite has improved that with a small piece of tube welded to the top bar instead of the hammered hanger that itself will bow at tension. I'll try to post some explaining pix later if you want.

Cheers, Max

Well, I can see that some folk have the same issue to get accessibility to their Mosrite Trussrod nut..

I am surprised that 6mm fits, as an Amercian subject I think more about 1/4, or ?
This "seems" to fit my Bass. But I am still searching a tool who get on the but..
