Re: Zero fret

Remember that if a new fingerboard is used that incorporates a zero fret, (usually adding about 1/4" to the overall length of the board) a like repositioning of the bridge or the neck would be in order as well to retain intonation unless there was adequate room behind the nut for the extension. . . which there usually is not.

I think Sleeper had a very innovative solution.

I would attempt to add 1/4" of rosewood to the end of the fingerboard. Make sure of a very clean and secure adhesion. Then I would use the dividing line to cut the groove for the zero fret, then add the nut past the 1/4" extension. Being the extension would be exactly where the nut used to be, that would give you the exact position for the fret. Anything behind the fret, as long as it is done correctly should not effect intonation. Just maker sure the nut grooves are cut deeper than the zero fret height.

Here is the conversion I just finished, I need to add the fret but otherwise it's finished.

I imagine adding a zero fret can be done though I tried to do it to a First Act once and I ruined it, Now the fretboard would be good to use when building a shorter scale instrument.

Thanks Dan, That's much more professional than the way I tried adding a zero fret. If I ever try to add a zero fret to a guitar again I'll probably follow the way you modified that neck.

Austin;
Coincidentally the neck I modified was also a First Act neck.
