It's easier if you install the fretboard, frets and binding while the neck is still square. That way you can secure it clamped in a vise for easier control while installing the frets. Otherwise that rounded neck want to move away from you. If you've already shaped the back of the neck before fretting, then rest it on sand or bean bags to hold it steady while working

I use old empty shot bags from reloading shotgun shells. These bags are about 14" long and 6" wide. I fill them up with beans then sew the top together. I've made up two of these. They work perfectly for holding a neck secure by placing them under the neck and allows you to tamp the frets into the slot without putting undo pressure on the neck. I use these whether I'm fretting or refretting a neck. You need some type of support on the neck when working on it because the curvature of the neck wants to roll out from under you while working on it.

Hi dubtrub, yeah I left all the wood onthe neck when I fretted the finger board, it is easer that way on a new build. I cut a block with a 10 inch radius to hold things in place while fretting. good advice. aaaaai have about 20 hrs. in the shaping of the neck, glad thats done, can't feel my fingers  I think every thing came out ok. I was a little concerned about breaking through to the truss rod chanel while carving the neck, but did not. Question for ya, how do you know when its right :?: Nice talking to you again, as always its been a pleasure. Have a good one. :D

Breaking through into the trussrod channel is always a concern. I use a set of calipers to measure the depth of the trussrod channel from the bottom of the fretboard and draw guideline along side the neck. That gives me a reference to adhere to. After I get it close, I use the calipers more often while final shaping the neck to insure uniformity it's entire length.
