Hey, when a pickup sounds great and lives up to your expectation, its a great pickup!!
I further noticed that the bobbin-block of the pickup I had to unwind is made of pine not maple.

 I'm beginning to think that there is NOTHING 100% consistent about Semie's pickups! Whatever was on hand when he was under the gun to finish the job. I wonder how much difference in tone we'd notice from maple to pine now. Very interesting....
How dare you presume to inject, using reproducible facts and rational thought, an on-topic discussion into a thread that had degenerated from sarcasm, personal invective, and hand-waving arguments?

You can use an oscilloscope or a "pickup analyzer" - though there is some doubt as to their accuracy. However, this is one of those situations where I've always said 'you have to trust your ears.' If you have to hook the pickup up to a device so that you can SEE the difference, then what's the point?

F'sure! I'm not a walking tone-alyzer evidently! I like what I like. ;)

I think it is safe to say that a good sounding pickup is a good sounding pickup. The more we play with things the more we learn.

Here is a reply to the test run, raygun. Why don't you all fly out here and we can have a pickup wind off. I have enough magnets and wire and 3 winders so we could wind pickups well into 2012. Plus I think all of the forum members need to fly out too. This should be manditory. We are that dedicated? Never mind the fact that I don't have to go anywhere. I will supply the Ventures model shaped pizza and some beer for later. I am sure Jim will be on hand to spill boxes of screws on the floor which he shouldn't be playing with, and flip the records over too.

By the way, the breakaways are cast alnico 5, I believe. And I am not thinking it would be worth the time to cast them now as it would jack the price of the pickup way up. I bought these ones I have because they were just sitting. And yes these are the 70's variety. That was the last time they were cast I was informed.

Let me know what weekend we are all getting together. I will let Jim co-ordinate all of this.

Bob

I'd love to come to greenbelt for a pickup-winding-frenzy, but unfortunately its a bit too far away and (as always) a little low on cash

Happy to assist!

Action items:
1. Mel, could you please design the T-shirts for this event? Save me a 3XL.
2. Sarah, could you please make some tortoiseshell truss-rod covers as a nice gift for all attendees? I'm thinking 300 should be plenty.
3. Dennis, could you please bring up a large bag of Key limes for the beverages?
4. Reber, can you please bring the ice?
5. Paul, could you please bring some good vodka?
6. Artie, please bring some complimentary vintage Mosrite straps (299 white ones, 1 black one)
7. Jayson, please bring a few hundred Tampa cigars.
8. Matt, Ed, Tim, Aaron, Eugen, and Danny, please one of your handbuilts or restorations as door prizes. I'll pick the winners.

That should get us started. Danny, bring a rope and I'll help you get that Semie/Gruggett belt sander out Bob's back door.

Y'know, I attend at least one Gretsch Roundup every year and they are so much fun. I would love to see a Mosrite gathering in a similar vain.

Pay my airfare and I'll be there, Bob! ;) Better yet, lets just get together next time we're at the NAMM Show.

My thoughts exactly...the human ear is subjective, after all. A laboratory test would have to be the preferred method of comparison but is it worth all that effort??
Fascinating subject and very interesting discussion, BTW :)
