Our latest concoction:

We call it the "Charlatan". We decreased the thickness of the maple core in the bobbin to make room for the extra wire. The coil itself is the same size all the way around as it is in our RH-100. We also kept the bobbin to the same height. So the coil is also shallow like you would find in our RH-100 or a Mosrite pickup. But its more compact. We also used thin Alnico 5 bar magnets with an opposing field (just like the RH-100/Mosrite pickup) and adjustable phillips pole-pieces. It peaks around 10.1K ohms. It has the hot a fat tone that you would expect from a Mosrite pickup. It even has the aluminum mounting bar on the bottom! If you want the Mosrite tone in a Strat then you now have the option...

And the bobbins will totally work if we wanted to use them in a Mosrite-style humbucker. We're still working on that one. We got a hit by a bad storm last month that tore up the roof to our shop, so it has put a lot of projects on hold. Some pickup orders were put on hold as I had to remake a lot of pickups that were damaged in the storm. I started sketching plans for this pickup about 4 months ago. Those plans were realized when I had an inquiry from a customer in Spain who asked if it was possible to cram the Mosrite's tone into a pickup that would fit his Strat.

The 63 American was pretty much put on the back burner over the past 3 weeks in trying to repair our shop. We had one body and neck that survived the storm. Then my dad got sidetracked by starting a prototype for a 60s instro/surf band (I can't say who at this time) but he's back to working on the 63 AM simultaneously. I'll post more news/pictures as things unfold...

Raygun, sorry to hear about the storm hitting your shop, but it sounds like you and your dad are well on the way back!

Very cool ideas about the pickups!

I put it in the bridge position of a Yamaha Strat-style guitar and was very pleased with the sound. It gave me the bite and distortion that I've always wanted in that guitar. I'm planning to wind two more for the middle and neck and add a push/pull pot for a "neck on" switch for the more traditional tones, plus the standard Strat switching. Of course, I had 250K pots in that guitar to cut down on some of the brightness. Since these pickups are wound hotter like Mosrite pickups they sounded a little muddier with the 250K pots, so I pulled them out and installed 500K pots and voila! Whats great is that they clean up real nicely when rolling the volume down so you can still retain some of the guitar's "Strattyness". I'm working on a coil-tapped version very soon so you can run the pickups at 5K or 6K ohms with the flip of a switch. With the 43-guage wiring they'll probably sound twangier than normal Strat pickups with the coil-tap engaged.

cool matt. I was wondering about what pots to use with those pickups. have you given any thought to making a set with a separate coil underneath to use as a humcancelling effect? that would be pretty darn cool in a strat or a parts rite guitar :D

We have many irons in the fire. We are definitely trying to create a "noiseless" version of the RH-100/Mosrite-style pickup. We've considered "stacked" designs among others. We're also looking into borrowing some noise-reduction ideas from the Lace Sensor pickups. The biggest problem with all of these designs is that, no matter what, they're going to reduce the highs to some degree and we lose the authentic tones. At the moment we're leaning more toward a side-winder design rather than a stacked version. But these plans have been up in the air for several months. The '63 AM has now been put on the back-burner. The pickup orders have exploded into something we never expected it to and my dad is devoting most of his time to winding pickups along with me to try and keep up with the orders. Aside from that he's working on the other prototype for that 60s instro/surf band, which has taken priority over our own guitars. Just like the idea for the coil-tapped Strat-sized pickup, my latest experiment involves a coil-tapped RH-100. The 12.5K coil is tapped at 5.9K to get a cleaner Fender-esque tone and engaged with a push/pull pot. With the wider and flatter coil, we're hoping the pickup will resemble the tone of a Jazzmaster when the tap is engaged. This would give the old surf cats the best of both worlds - the clean and punchy Jazzmaster tone and the hot and dirty tone of the Mosrite with the pull of a switch that doesn't alter the look of the guitar. And of course they'll be available unpotted or wax potted. We'll keep everyone updated...
