Re: Sarah's pickups restauration.
I will do that. I have to go on the hunt for some white foam... There is not much exactly the same as the stuff on the pickups... Its mostly a kind of gray color and I think a bit softer than original. And I suspect that the normal furniture-stuff will fall apart in nastiness in the future.. Maybe after all I use the stuff gfs packed their pickups in its a bit thinner but will do the job I think.

I forgot the technical name of the foam, but I have an industrial supplier here in the States who can supply it large quantities. We got some samples but we liked using felt better on our pickups - it has a cleaner look to it. If I can find the supplier I'll PM you.

I will ask my florist!
Matt, I don't need a couple of square meters for just a couple of pups. I ask Sarah what she likes best.
But hey, for the right vintage tone you need the vintage stuff right?

Um, I don't know. I'll leave that to your expertise.

I'm not sure how much difference a measly piece of foam is going to make on a pair of pickups but if thats what the customer wants you can bet I'll put it on there! Brass plates don't make a shred of difference in tone either, but some people swear they do!

Pretty soon I'm gonna start marketing an environmentally-friendly biodegradable "Vintage Pickup Tone Oil" that is so safe you can drink it right out of the bottle, just apply one drop to each pole-piece and voila! But don't put the Strat formula on a Mosrite pickup! It'll ruin the tone and may even devalue the pickup!

You may need to get Urethane foam, its impervious to all except chlorinated solvents. It's not cheap but is about the best high density foam you can get, and it comes in any size or thickness you need. I just bought 2 square feet 1/2" thick for resin backing it cost me about $15.00.

Re: Sarah's pickups restauration.
Tinkertime!
Rewind the broken pickup. about 10000 winds made it just a little less hot than the other one. So this one is for the neck position.

Soldered the leads and cleaned the parts. I did not replate the screws because Sarah want to keep them to look as they are .

Glued the bobbin and magnets back in the cover. (and messed up my camera settings)

I found some white foam that will do the job and mixed some black gunk (boneblack&epoxy)

Done

New leads for the other one.

ready to ship

BTW/: I used 43AWG wire and red and green because I went out of white wire and all the shops are closed today because its a holiday...

Wow, very cool. The winding machine looks pretty nifty as well. Did you make that? How does the counter work?

Re: Sarah's pickups restauration.
More cool photos! Did you record the polarity of the magnets? Are the poles North or South?
Did the first pickup have one full turn of black lead wire on the bobbin like the second one does?
