Hi Everybody,
We all are aware of the unique qualities of Mosrite pickups, and they are noted for their high output. Here's a theoretical question that some of you Tech Mavens may have actually experimented with: If a Mosrite pickup is underwound, does the tonal response expand...increasing top end?
I know high output is part of the unique Mosrite sound, driving the amp a bit more, but if the pickups had less output what happens with this particular design?

Those Carvin pickups is what Semie used in Joe Maphis' guitar with that beautiful Mosrite sound, and look what the ohm output was. The Mosrite pups that Semie hand made were patterned after the Carvins but with higher output/more windings. To my ears they sound the same. It is common knowledge among pickup guru's that the more windings, the more it filters out the highs. I guess that is true in theory but it doesn't seem right in reality. All my high output Mosrite pups have great highs.

Interesting question. I've got the M3 California RH-100 pickups in my Meshugga-Rite - these are built to vintage Mosrite specs with the addition of a split coil. Mine are wired to 13K with a split at about 7K. The lower output setting has more high end (or less mids) compared to the full output setting. It seems to me pretty similar to the tone of a full output pickup set far from the strings, so it may have more to do with overall signal output from the guitar rather than the resistance of the pickup.

For me, the flatter top end is one of the things I like about Mosrite pickups, especially in the bridge position - much less tendency to get ice-pick tone then the Fenders I have.
