Well friends, i have decided to start my first "Mosrite" project. (2nd guitar project) I have just made the body blank out of Alder

My friend has a Univox Hi-Flyer, so i asked him if i could borrow it to make a template. He humored me and about an hour later i came up with this.

I just glued the body blanks together out of alder a few minutes ago.

I made the neck today out of hard maple so all i'm waiting for is for the body to glue up.

i will continue to post photos as I make progress. Hopefully it will be easier than the Gibson EB-2 Copy im building.....aiyah.....

Cool! Do you happen to have step by step pics of the neck making project? How many pieces to the neck?

Don't want to sound negative but why on earth would you be so close to building a Mosrite clone then build a Hi Flyer clone instead? You could probably buy one on eBay for half the cost and effort. There are several here on the forum that could provide a tracing of their Mosrite for you.

Really? I didnt want to bug anybody about it.....but i'd much appreciate it. I actually blew up a Ventures Bass at kinkos and blew it up to 32 scale, but that's another project for another day.

If you blew it up to 32" scale it will be too large. Mosrite bass is 30 1/4" scale. I'd suggest you do yourself a favor and go through as many of the post as you can here in the project section of the site. There have been numerous Mosrite guitars and basses built by our members and there is a wealth of information covering ever aspect of the process many included the necessary dimensions.

If you are going to all the trouble of scratch building a Mosrite clone you might as well get it right the first time. Otherwise you are just going through the motions.

On the positive side, this could be the first Hi-Flyer that's done "Rite"! :)

Yeah, i know that theyre 30 1/4 inch scales, i just wanted something a bit bigger for myself *shrugs* all the 32" scales that ive played i liked, so i might as well make my own cutsom deal :)

Hey--

I like any scale bass, but I have to confess that I have been trying for a while-- to no avail-- to get Bob Shade of Hallmark Guitars to make a solid-body Mosrite-styled bass with a longer neck; 32 inches if not 34.

There are a ton of various bass scales. I'll try to list a few here, and apologize if I get them wrong!!!

I have an Ashbory bass, which is a fretless 17" scale with thick silicon strings; sounds a lot like a full-sized acoustic bass. I also still have a Hofner 500 Beatle bass, which is 30-1/4" scale, I think. I learned to play on an Epiphone Rivoli, which also had a 30-1/2" scale, same as the single pickup Mosrite solidbody I had back in the mid-1970s. And I played a Rickenbacker for years, which had a 33-1/4" scale, and a Fender Mustang, which had a 30" scale. I also played a doghouse bass in a couple of rockabilly and country bands back in the late 1970s, and those have a 42-1/3" fretless scale, I believe.

Other weird basses I've had, like the purple Ampeg and Danelectros, had different scales, too.

Fender Precisions, and the custom basses I now also play, have 34" scales.

So bass scales are all over the place. Where it seems to make a difference is in how the scale length affects how tight the low strings are.

So that is why I recommended-- to absolutely no effect-- to Bob to make a longer scale bass.

Day 2:
I cut the body out of the blank this morning and did the proper amount of sanding to come up with this

Image

Afterward, I took the body down to the thickness sander, as it had a lot of excess wood on top.

About half an hour later i had finished up and began the routing process. This was the Result
