Postby oipunkguy » Wed Mar 21, 2012 10:14 pm

Thanks to Friz I got in a tracing of his combo model. So I plan to make a Joe Maphis copy when I get a chance to find some spruce and walnut lumber. anyone know where I should look for spruce in pieces thick enough?

You can get good plank cut spruce from Alaska Specialty Woods http://www.alaskawoods.com/products.php?pid=120&detail=true It's hard to find plank cut spruce for carved top projects. The wedge cut spruce won't work for a Joe Maphis. Most of the spruce out there is for flat top Martin type body's. You can probably get good Walnut stock at most hardwood lumber yards in your area.

Good luck with your project. -Terry

thanks Terry. Yeah I don't think finding walnut will be an issue. Does anyone know for sure what type of spruce Semie used? As for now I'm just assuming is sitka.

well this project has taken a slightly different turn. since I'm a sucker for free stuff, I brought in some old pine fence I had laying in my garage. it took a little time to glue up all the planks of wood, but so far, she's lookin good. ;)

Don't I see a nasty crack running across the entire lower (upper?) treble side of the body?
Interesting choice of wood, though :)

yeah, that's why I choose for that side to be on the top. Since i'm constructing it based on the joe maphis, the inside will be hollowed out and then I will be gluing on the top wood. this wood may turn out to be a nightmare for a guitar body, but there's only one way to find out. ;) besides, the wood was free! lol.

did some more work on this build. I hollowed out the inside using my router. I still need to go through it and clean it up some but here's what she looks like now.

since these board had some warp in them, I had to plan out the top and bottom some. since I down have fancy equipment like guys like ED, I have to plan out the board by hand using this antique rabbit plane.
