The GAUGE PAGE

Postby Dennisthe Menace » Wed Dec 17, 2008 12:14 pm

OK....EVERY other Guitar Forum seems to have a String Thread, and EVERYONE likes to suggest
what their favorite gauge or brand of strings are, or what they had luck (or no luck) in using.
Naturally, EVERYONE will not have the same preference, due to possibly the style of music they
are playing, their technique of playing, or their attack to the strings alone.
So with that being said, let the String Bending and Popping begin  ...............
make the Mos' of it, choose the 'rite stuff.

I use to use D'Adario .009-.042 but switched to Ernie Ball super slinkies cause they are cheaper and last longer but both had the same sound quality I like when matched with my strat with a seymour duncan sh-4 humbucker in the bridge position. Lots of rich harmonics, punchy lows and great mids.

All my guitars are setup with D'Addario EXL115W's. They last as long as I need them to and sound good.
I will say that I have used almost every brand out there through the years and have had good results with all of them.

Just to add another spark into the fire, does anyone experiment by
making up their own "Custom Gauges" and is it the same gauge set-up
on all your guitars?

I've got D'Addario 10-46 rounds (XL110 I think) on my Mosrites. I had been using 12s on my Jazzmaster and 13s on my Jaguar, both Chromes, but recently put 10 rounds on my Jazzmaster and 11 Chromes on my Jaguar, just to get a sense of them. My preference is for D'Addario strings, mainly because I really like the Chromes over other flats, but I haven't experimented much with rounds.

As for custom sets, when I had my Jaguar baritone (RIP) I would get DAddario chromes in 13 gauge, drop the 13 and add a 75, and 26 plain instead of the 26 wound.

For the Strats, the Tele and the Hallmark: 10-46 D'Addario rounds.
For the Jazzmaster: The .11 D'Addario Rounds
For the ES295: 12's

Pretty basic. If I were gigging steadily, it might be different.

Most of my guitars are strung with XL110's. But, I've been using EXL110+ on my Les Paul. I kind of like them.

I've recently been using a brand called John Pearse 011's. They sound and feel great!
Am considering to try those on my Mosrite Excellent although all of you claim that 10s are the way to go with Mosrite. I'm trying but darn it feels like playing with rubber bands ;-).
