number of songs in your set list?

Postby dubtrub » Tue Dec 01, 2009 6:00 pm

I'm curious as to number of songs your band has for for each one hour set list. Also, do you have an entire different set list for each hour? In other words, are you running about fifty plus different songs for a four hour gig?

Danny,
The problem with the tunes we play can range anywhere from 2 1/2 to 5 minutes each, therefore we might have only
7 or 8 tunes in one set, while another set might have as many as 12 tunes  . BTW, we usually go with the 40 on, 20 off......

As far as different tunes (variety), we usually have a basic set(s) of tunes, anywhere from 2-3 fast tunes, then a slow tune.
However, if everyone is going nuts over the fast tunes at the moment, then we would be NUTS to play a slow song.
No pun intended (well maybe), we usually play the crowd by ear ;) .......

I'm the roadie and engineer for The Sugar Shakers, a rockabilly band here in small town coastal Alaska.

At about 3 minutes a song, they end up playing nearly sixty different songs by the end of a 4-hour gig.

Are we playing one song after another or is there a break between each. It depends 15-20 and yes we have different songs on each list. Songs a subjected to change apond request . I'ld say 50-60 song is a nice start but you should have more.

The Thunderheads rarely play a gig that requires 4 sets, that being said we have a 60+ song list we work off of. All instrumental, mostly Surf but some Swing and Blues stuff also. An hour set will have 12-15 songs depending on selection and time between songs. Playing Blues around 8-10 tunes in a set. :D

In Meshugga Beach Party, we've got about 55-60 songs in our repetoire. Most of the songs run about 2.5 minutes, usually leading to 20 song sets, unless we bring out the Dead Joke Scrolls, then all bets are off.

Good topic.

The Bakersfield-country-style band I was in most recently played ten songs per set. That would work out to just about 45 minutes, and we'd take 15 minutes off between sets. We would average two or three fast songs to each slow song.

Of course, all this was predicated on how the audience was reacting; we would modify sets to suit the mood of the crowd.

We would also drop songs and substitute others from our stable as conditions warranted.

Seemed to work well.

We always start the night out with a new set-list of about 29 songs. We play 4 hour gigs all the time. We never get through all the songs on the list because of requests and we also in many places play square dances. They take up a bit of time. We have a master list that is about 6 pages long and has between 15 and 20 songs per page. I have to agree that a 40 to 50 song list is needed to play a 4 hour gig.
