New Guitar Day/Night Hallmark II

Postby khai123 » Sat Jul 07, 2012 12:48 am

I ordered this guitar some time ago and it got to me pretty fast for Maryland to California; but I was away helping family. So in a FedEx facility an hour and a half away it sat, for almost 3 weeks :o , but I picked it up tonight at 8 o'clock. I was tired, very long day, and FedEx couldn't have been slower, so I wasn't too peppy. But as soon as I cut the tape from the bohemoth brown cardboard box and saw that first glimpse of crocodile case, I shivered with new found excitement. I slid the case from the box meticulously and heard a resounding thud from the back of the box. In my uncontrollable glee I had forgotten of the Hallmark Records "The Kustom Kings" a tribute to the legendary George Barris. I carefully removed it from its own personal box, and it beheld a personalized inscription from none other than Bob Shade! (Nice message too!) Then, with anticipation getting the best of me; I unlatched the beautiful case and inside lay the most beautiful guitar I've ever laid eyes upon. The 3-Tone Burst glowed golden and red and expertly shadowed black. Removing it from its case, I ran quickly to a tuner and got it to pitch and played all the Ramones songs I could remember at the moment (the entire It's Alive set, actually) and at 9:17 I hesitantly put the guitar back into it's case for the night. Then i cjecked the shipment schedule on a leather guitar strap I had custom made to fit the Johnny Ramone-ish vibe on this beaut. Has about 4-5 days coming on. I will have pictures of this beatiful monster tomorrow, as time prohibits a good and glorious picture. SORRY FOR THE LIFE STORY, HARD TO SUM UP THE FEELING OF A NEW GUITAR!

With heavy eyes, good night!

i know JUST how you feel. I picked up the new red, white &blue guitar from M3 a few days ago and haven't been able to put it down. the neck is perfect, sanded just the way i like it for faster slides. and the dual-tone pickups are great, QUIET too. enjoy your new axe! it won't be long and you will start craving another one! :D

I've played the guitar for about 3 hours all tgether today, and it's great. But, the low (thick) E keeps popping out of the saddle, with ease really; then the G rattles pretty bad. This guitar plays great, but those 2 things are kepping it from perfect. I just accidently broke the high (thin) E so, I'll restring it with 9's and see what happens. Bob, can you give any advice on this?

First, thanks for posting and I am glad you love your new Hallmark! Yes we can have you back in business in 5 to 10 minutes.

We generally set the neck so the bridge does not have to be raised way up. Some guys play harder than others and it sounds like since you are into the Ramones I can guess which one you are. ( I love them too ).

A simple shim about the size of a heavy thickness guitar pick is all that is needed. It is a 5 minute job. Follow these simple directions:

1. loosen your strings until they go limp.

2. With a piece of masking tape, secure the strings down to the fretboard at the zero fret. (his will keep them from popping off the tuning key or getting tangled)

3. Unscrew the neck bolts and remove the neck and and set aside.

4. Place a small shim made of wood or some guys use plastic about a 1/4" wide, in the back of the neck pocket the full width, with a piece of tape holding it in place.

5. Re-assemble, remove tape from the fingerboard raise bridge slightly to compensate for the shim and re-tune and start playing Ramones with no string popping off of the saddle.

Buzzing string:

If the new placement of the bridge does not fix the buzz, simply take a tiny bit of bearing grease on a tooth pick, or Vaseline, and pop off the string from the saddle (you do not have to tune it down) and force the grease down between the roller and the housing. This simple trick always fixes a buzzing roller and it still works properly.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need further assistance. Thank you and sorry for any inconvenience!

P.S. How do you like the tone and playability??

Thanks for the tips, I'll have it all fixed and set-up by tomorrow and will give full report. Thanks for the speedy response, lets me know I'm in good hands! Tone/Playability: Unmatched. This is THE guitar I never knew I needed. It's weird. I opened the case the first night and like all scoped the guitar for the tiniest flaws, etc. This is the only guitar I've ever played that when playing, I only think about playing. I usually think, "Next song? Wish I had a Reverb pedal. Whoops, missed that octave." But now, all has become one! :ugeek:

Well I've had everything re-strung and set-up and been playing for about 2 hours now and can say, none of the problems have come back! Also, with the heavier neck angle I started experimenting with bridge height and was able to reach a point that had nearly lower action then before and I don't pop the thick E out of the saddle. I used a small piece of an old i-Tunes gift card I'll never use  So now it has a much more important use! I really want to thank Mr. Shade for backing up his MAGNIFICIENT product so quickly and helping me through this little sitch. I must say the Hallmark II with a set of Dunlop .9-.42 ROARS and TWANGS, it's got it all. So maybe something to try. I also decided to unblock the tremolo, and might not go back to blocked, I was afraid that bashing away at hackneyed barre chords would affect tuning, but not the Shade tremolo, steady as Chuck Norris' fist!

Eyan, I am glad to hear everything went just as expected!

I would love to see a little video of you jamming to the Ramones if the opportunity presents itself.

Hey Ho! Let's Go!
