Another newbie from PA!!

Postby Vec » Sun Apr 05, 2009 9:08 am

Howdy all, newbie Vaughn from PA here.

I've been in the guitar game as a weekend gigging warrior for about 40 years (now an old fart!) and I found this site when my interest piqued for a Hallmark 60 Custom guitar...and I really appreciate all the helpful info I found here. So, I decided to order the Hallmark 60 and join the forum to see where this all leads me :D.

I remember Mosrite guitars back in the day but never owned or played one basically because there were no dealers around small town PA...so I grew up playing Strats for the most part and still like them when I can find a good one. I like Rickenbacker 12 strings too. However, I always wanted a P90 style guitar but never found one I really liked and, when I saw the Hallmark, I figured it was time to kick the tires to see where it takes me.

Needless to say, growing up in the 60's, the Ventures gave myself (and many other wannabees) a lot of "free" guitar lessons to get us started (put on the 33 or 45 and try to make a similar sound ;)). So, here I am, 40 years later trying to relive my childhood ;). My weekend variety band still plays surfy songs like Walk, don't run, Pipeline, Wipe Out, and a few others...and I'm still trying to get them right!

I'm an electronic tech by profession and my day job is maintaining telecommunications equipment. However, as a sideline, I did warranty work for Fender for a number of years so I might be able to help anyone with electronic issues. I also build my own amps, pedals, and modify TS9's under the name of "Vaughn's Mods". I also enjoy Amateur (Ham) radio when I get the time.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to a lot of interesting discourse around the forum...and don't forget to check out the picture of my Hallmark 60 on the appropriate thread!

.-- . .-.. -.-. --- -- ., ...- . -.-. You'll love your 60 Custom. They're really versatile guitars. You might not go back to your Strat, though. I've got a Maxon OD9 I really like. what mods do you do for them?

I hope the Hallmark 60 Custom works out...I'm still tweaking it to taste, but it has to be the coolest guitar I ever played. If I pick it up to kill a few minutes in the den, 2 hours pass without me realizing it ;) . I wish the frets were a little bigger but I don't seem to have a lot of trouble adjusting to it.

My TS9 mods are designed to fit in a TS9...so they may not fit in the OD9. However, you can check out my website at:

What you're going to find I think, is after playing your H60C for awhile, you'll have a hard time adjusting to the Strat.

Welcome Vaughn, I find many similarities in your interesting intro and can second gplayer’s remarks about the Hallmark 60 Custom…I bought one too! Yeah, after 45 years or so, I now finally have my “Ventures model” and am as happy as a kid! :D

Cool that you're an electronics man; I'm not...BTW I decided last year I had to have a TS808 even though my playing doesn't justify having one  I went ahead anyway and jumped into the deep with a reissue! (...think I did good?)

Welcome to the forum, Vaughn. That 60 Custom you have is a striking guitar - I think it's the first photo (outside of Hallmark's site) that I've seen, and I like it. 'Course, I like off the wall color schemes on guitars. Enjoy the forum, and your Hallmark - they are definitely keepers.

Thanks for the warm welcome guy's!! Seems like a good place to hang....lot's of crazy-ness out there on a lot of the other guitar forums and, so far, this seems like a breath of fresh air ;).
