It was red
metal flake red
i saw it in a music store in sacramento
some thirty or so years ago
and it was cheap,
just over a hundred dollars
maybe $130
and it was a mosrite and i wanted it

the frets were pretty far gone
and the neck had some serious nicks
and there were cracks in the finish on back of the neck
the finish on the body looked
like it had been polished with a brick
i thought it needed someone to save it

i took it to a guy on marconi ave
and i think his name maybe was toshi
and he filled the nicks and the cracks
but did not remove any lacquer
so it still looks all cracked and checked
but even 30 years later is very smooth to the touch
and the damage has not progressed
i think it is beautiful; he is an artist
you may disagree

he did not have the right fret wire
but replaced the frets with a low profile
but wider guage fret
which i prefered
he did an amazing job

i left all the hardware as is
all funky and dull and worn off in spots
because i liked it that way

since then the scratch plate has warped a bit
i don't know why
and i don't think it ever really fit that well

i'm somewhat surprised at the interest
my guitar has produced
you all seem to really appreciate the mosrite brand
so with all humility
full disclosure:

if i had known then what i know now
i would have just polished the body
as best i could
but i didn't
and i thought the metal flake red was hokey
NOW i would love it
but that was then
so i painted it black
the sad part is i took off the red
i am so sorry i did that

No need to apologize about the refinish. If we all knew then what we know now, we'd have closets full of Mosrites, Jazzmasters and blonde Fender amps from the time when you could get them cheap! Personally, I've got a 1966 Jazzmaster that I've heavily modified over the years - I'd never cut up a vintage instrument again, but I also love the guitar and the modifications I've made, so there it is.

Besides, a refinish is about the least offensive thing you can do to a guitar. How many have been hacked up for Gibson humbuckers, Strat type vibratos, or some bizarre body shape!
