Hello--my name is Jon Fine, and I've been a fan of Mosrite guitars since the mid-'60's. I remember when I first saw one, on the cover of the Ventures LP with the three headstocks. I still think the Mosrite shape is one of the coolest designs ever, although I've never been comfortable with the narrow neck and tiny frets. I owned a Mosrite Stereo 350 at one time--bought it new in '74--and the wider neck and bigger frets made it a lot more playable than the '60's ones, although I like the single-coil sound better--the 350 had humbuckers and was very dark-sounding--I only kept it a couple of years. I'm looking forward to posting on this site--there are some very knowledgeable folks on here. Those of you who frequent the Carvin forums will know me from there, as I've been a regular on the Carvin Museum and Carvin BBS sites for several years now. I've been a pro guitarist for forty years (I'm getting to be an old fart!), although my primary income comes from teaching guitar these days. I've been contemplating getting one of the new Mosrite clones, and there's a wealth of information on here.

If you couldn't handle the neck and frets on the 60's Mosrite's than get a Hallmark 60 Custom bigger neck taller frets and a great price. I like so many here have one and they also have the sound. Bob Shades is great to work with and will do you right. John.

Welcome to the forum, Jfine! On the subject of Hallmark, They're raved about here. Bob Shade will take custom orders too, I may order one in a custom finish some day. ;)

Welcome, Jon! Great to have you join us. In addition to considering the Hallmark Custom 60 (which I own, and highly recommend), another option is a Fillmore Ranger with a neck that seems to be a little wider/flatter - mine is turning out to be a great player guitar. Fillmore's a little "spendier" than the Hallmark.

Thank you all! I've been considering a Hallmark 60 Custom--I've had their website in my Favorites list for a few years now. Anybody have any experience with the new 59 Custom? I'm wondering how it compares tonally and in tuning stability to the 60--seems like the 60 with its roller bridge would stay in tune better than the 59. I've also contacted Artie at Front Porch regarding a Fillmore with Dana Moseley pickups--the '63 and '64-styles with the binding look great--but I don't think my budget will stretch that far, and, as cool as it would be to have a Mosrite that has an actual connection to the Moseley family, I think the bigger neck on the Hallmark would fit my hand better.
