Hello from Kansas

Postby marsman » Tue Nov 10, 2009 6:44 pm

I am a new member but a old timer. I have been a Ventures fan from the early 60's,
I learned playing the guitar from the "Play with the Ventures" albums and playing
by ear on their many songs. I have been a Mosrite fan ever since. Back in the old days
when I played professionally in a local band in the late 60's/early 70's that preformed at
colleges and nightclubs I played bass. Unfortunately my gear was Gibson EBO and Kustom
200 with 2 cabinets with 3 15" JBL's in each cabinet. I wish I had a Mosrite, I remember
walking in a music shop in 1969, there was a blue Mosrite for $400.00 and like a idiot
I didn't bite, of course back then that was a lot of money .

Of course you grow up and get married and your have to work for a living. Over the years
I acquired drums sets, acoustic guitars, synthesizers and added a 66 Gibson SG. and recorded
my own stuff on my trusty Teac 3340s multi track.

But being married, having a kid, a mortgage and paying for college, I sold all of my stuff over the years.
Now I wish I could have it all back. ( remember that for all you youngsters)

Now all I have is my Teac and a Yamaha PSR8000 to record some tracks on.

I would still love to have a original Mosrite, but the cost is to much to explain to
wife and I don't like sleeping with the dog. So I have been looking at Hallmark Custom 60
as a substitute.

Question, I notice a true Mosrite has a bolt-on-neck, while the Hallmark is set-in neck, can anyone
tell me if there is true difference of tone or reliability.

Thanks for any info and let's keep Semie Moseley best looking guitar in the world forum going.

Welcome to the forum! The earliest Ventures models have set necks, so the Hallmark is in keeping with that style. I bet you'd be very happy with one.

Welcome, this is the place for all that is Mosrite. The Hallmark is as close to a Mosrite as you can get at a much better price. They are great guitars and I have one, just remember it isn't a Mosrite.

Hey, Marsman--

Many of us could kick ourselves over the instruments we have let pass through our hands!!!

As a proud Hallmark owner, I think you might be very pleasantly surprised at the quality and playability. They sound great, and the price is surprisingly reasonable.

The coolest thing about this forum is that so many members have such a wonderful amount of knowledge and are willing to share it. My recommendation is to spend a few weekends reading as much of the forum as you can and keep a legal pad and pen handy while you do. You will learn so much about so many Mosrites and Mosrite-based instruments that it just isn't funny.

That can guide you to a short list of guitars you should evaluate if you feel like it.

Welcome and let us know how your journey goes!

Welcome Marsman, Welcome. Hallmark is indeed a great way to go if you want something close to a Mosrite, or so I'm told. Everyone raves about 'em. ;)

Welcome from another Ventures fan here on this space ship Forum ;) Yeah, the Ventures was the band that led me to lust for a Mosrite guitar too. To cut a long story short, I ended up recently owning a Hallmark 60 Custom... 8-)

Welcome to the forum. The folks with the Hallmarks seem to really rave about them. For the money I don't think you can beat them.

When I had my Mosrite Stereo 350 guitar in '74, I ran it through a Kustom K200 (tremolo and reverb) with 3-12" Altecs. I wound up replacing the K200 with a Kustom Hustler 4-10" combo which sounded a lot better.
You're in Olathe? I lived in Wichita from mid-'79-mid-'80, and again from late-'81-mid-'82. During the '79-'80 period, I played in the house band (remember those?) at the Brookside Club there. Vonna Faye and Hot Kofy, we were called. The Mosrite and Kustom were long gone by that time--I think I was using a Peavey guitar and amp by then.

Welcome!!! Great to have you!!! I own Mosrites and a Hallmark also, hard to beat for the dough. If you can hold out and save a little more, there is a discount for Forum members at Front Porch Music on a new Mosrite!!!! ;)
