Hi,

Jeff from Canada. I'm a big Gibson man, but a fan of vintage guitars in general and have recently taken an interest in Mosrites. Not sure if I will buy one, but does $1000 sound fair for a '66 with a refinish?

Regarding the 66 Mark V. I personally would not get that guitar. Just my opinion, but too many unknowns about it.
I agree with the earlier post that if its a good playing guitar it would be worth it, but you can't give it a test drive to verify that. For $1000 you could get a hallmark custom 60 and be guaranteed a great playing guitar. From a collectibility standpoint this guitar has too many problems. 1. poor refinish, 2. Neck that is likely not original to the guitar. 3. Actually the model is unknown, could be a MK II or a MK V with the alleged neck pocket date. 4. Neck does not have a Ventures logo which all MK II's and MK V's should have in 1966. 5. No truss cover - non venture logo MK V guitars should have a truss cover. 6. No serial number stamped on the fretboard. The neck pocket date and number is NOT the serial number as he stated. The kicker is that the dates on the neck and body appear authentic, so whats up with this guitar??? I acknowledge that these could all be factory mistakes, but I doubt it. So in my opinion, wait until a better one comes along. I picked up a nice Mk II last month for $1200 on ebay. If all you're interested in is a good playing guitar with the mosrite sound, get a Hallmark. If you want an authentic mosrite to play, that will increase in value due to its collectability, pass on this guitar. Wait till you can find one that is as original as possible without the types of issues the alleged MK II / MK V on ebay has. Please ask questions on this forum. Lots of information on Mosrites here to help you get the guitar you want. Good luck on finding the Mosrite you want, whatever you decide.

A refin can be (and usually is) a huge devaluating factor and the 'cheap' refin alone on this particular axe would definitely make me pass -even if $999 seems to be reasonable ...at first glace! Good things come to those who are patient
