Just stumbled across this forum today and have spent many hours reading. What a thrill to read Deke Dickerson's posts, it's almost like getting an email from him! Anyway, I'm into Mosrite Combo and Joe Maphis basses. Have 3 Combos (one red, two sunburst) and one Joe Maphis bass. Always have my eye out for these two models. Don't see the Joe Maphis bass too often but I'll keep looking for them...

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! And thanks for the Celebrity 3 ebay tip, Deke. I'm watching it now. I used to check ebay every day for Mosrites, not so much these days but now that I'm on this forum I'm sure I'll check more often. What ever happened to the ebay guy from a few years back who bought almost every Mosrite that popped up. I think he was in Tennessee. He had a very nice Joe Maphis bass, and I think he had a gospel bass in white. Man, I'd love to have that Gospel bass.

I think there's no better bass sound than a short scale bass with flatwounds played with the treble rolled all the way back, and using only the neck pickup. That's what a bass should sound like. Most old Gibsons fit the bill. And as cool as they are, for me they lack the cachet that Mosrites have.

I don't know if I've ever seen a picture or heard much about pre-Ventures Mosrite basses. Are there many? Any?

This is about as early of a bass that I know of, it is Bob K's 63 of this forum. Although it is not a pre Ventures model, if any exists, notice that it has a side jack and the single bar vibramute bridge. This would be a hand made pre production guitar made at the Panama Lane shop before Semie hit the 'big time'.

Man I gotta say that sidejack 63 Ventures bass is the coolest bass I've ever seen! Unbelievably cool! I assume sidejack basses are very very rare. That bass is an austere work of art. I've never seen a photo of one before. Thanks for posting it. Nice photo too!
