Nokie's Custom Mosrite

Well, at least I'm assuming this belongs (belonged?) to Nokie given the shrine-like arrangement in the photograph. In the bottom right you can see what I believe is Desert Surfer's Hunt guitar that he got from the man himself. The maple and rosewood binding as well as the wooden pickup covers and surrounds certainly make this one unique - quite different from any of the other Ventures or Nokie models put into production. Just curious if anyone knows anything about this axe? Desert Surfer?

I blew up the image for a better look, and it appears that the neck is the same as those partially shaped necks from the parts-rite guy out of Canada. The side profile of the neck is still unshaped extending about four inches from the body plus it looks real chunky all the way down the neck. It would be like stringing up a 2X4 board and trying to play it. Maybe this is just someone's personal tribute display.

Yep, I checked out the neck profile too. But if you notice the photo date stamp, the picture dates back to 1987, way before the whole Canadian Partsrite phenomenon. However, some models from this period (the American/VIII, for example) do exhibit huge neck heels that don't taper down until about the 12th fret.

I can't tell from the photo except the Hunt guitar you mentioned. Unfortunately, Nokie had sold most of his early guitars before I met him. I wish I had started collecting his guitars 10-20 years earlier.

These were probably Nokie's 80's guitars. The only 80's guitars I got from Nokie are:

1) Tony Hunt guitar made in early 80's. (The other Hunt was sold to Japan)



2) Chet Atkins CE Custom shop

This was produced in early 1980's when Chet left Gretsch and started working with Gibson. This model was made in Gibson's custom shop as Chet Atkins' CE model (not the regular CE model). Nokie used this guitar (limited edition #16) in many of his concerts in the US and Japan.

For examples; Nokie used this guitar in 1984 "Original Masters" concert in Japan (Played a duo of Beatles' "Yesterday" together with Gerry McGee). He also used this guitar to play his famous numbers; "El Bimbo" and "Alabama Jubilee" in 1984 Oklahoma City concert

I also got a Gibson '59 ES330T which Nokie just used it at home, never played on stage.



BTW, I saw Nokie and Judy last week at CAAS in Nashville, TN. He was very happy and told me that Guitar Player Magazine is going to honor him with "2009 Legend Award". The Award will be presented in Muriel Anderson's All Star Night concert on 7/18.

It is funny to see those old Ventures albums collected by Nokie.

Coincidentally, I brought all my old Ventures albums (I did not get them from Nokie) last week to Nashville and asked Nokie to autograph them.
