66 mosrite taking refin off, Got it all done! new pics!

Here is the before again

Very cool Heavy checking (i dig) I forgot to get a good pick but there is a small layer of gold under the blue! Weird. Its finish, gold, black, and then white under coat. So where i sanded by the checks you can see some gold.

In this pic you see on the treble side of the neck pickup there was some black tape on it when i got it. You see what the Pre nicotine un faded finish looked like the day it left factory.
Very cool blue, then less faded in controll cavity and under pickguard, and then very darkend on exposed body. This guitar has been around the block!

Scot!

Woah!! I'm like totally confused with your S/N! I wasn't aware of Semie/or/Mosrite
starting over with their S/Ns  ...../????? :?
make the Mos' of it, choose the 'rite stuff.

Like Dennis, that serial number comes as a bit of a surprise.
The original blue finish is beautiful. Much superior to the refin shade.
Are you planning to use the liquid buffing compound to try to restore the finish to the under-the-pickguard color?
The checking is intense. Be careful not to knock any of them of the body.
You've got two great instruments! There are manufacturers who would charge you an extra $1K for the 'relic' job.

BTW, do you prefer Mosrites thru the Hiwatt or the Showman?

The serial is 4001 on fretboard (i think, i have some picks at work)
and back of neck is stamped 0002 under date, JUN 66.
I would like to try the buffing compound. Was it the 3m you were talking about?

Mos through the showman!!!! Or any fender, the hiwatts cool for some stuff but dosent surf super well. Ive only giged with it a couple times to get it out of the house.

Hey Scot,

>I would like to try the buffing compound. Was it the 3m you were talking about?<

Yea. A buddy of mine does some refin/restore work during the winter here in humid south Florida when the humidity is low, and he uses 3M products and cleans with Naptha. I believe it is 3M rubbing compound, and some other 3M products called 'Finesse' and 'Perfect', which I think are for restoring a shine to the finish. It would probably work on your pearl white baby too.
I'm not the expert, but these are the names I've heard. Some of the guys around this forum could probably give better advice.

Nice, I like the checking (crazing?) whatever you call it, it gives it a nice "been around awhile" look...

Did you wet sand? Or did you sand with the paper dry? I'm always nervous about wet sanding a guitar this old that could have some exposed wood.

Either way, it's off to a great start! Can't wait to see it back together again.

P.S. I'd personally do any rubbing compound/ buffing by hand. I'd be afraid that a machine might break loose some of that cracked paint.

Got it all sanded off, and buffed out. Here is the final product. I used some turtle wax, scratch x, 3M perfect it and somethin else. The picks dont really do the color justice you can see more green in person. neat color. Check it out!
