I was in a local independent guitar store. There is a "The New Mosrite of California" 12 string gee-tar there for $1,200.00. I have the money, but I thought that this was a little steep for this guitar. But I've heard that this era of Mosrite was really short & these guitars are hard to come by.
Should I go back & get that guitar or is it priced too high. It is in B+ condition, had all original parts except that it was missing the pick guard. Is there something I should look for, be concerned about, etc.
Your thought are greatly appreciated.

Re: Should I buy this Celebrity
It seems like an okay price to me. If it were me I would check the serial number and look it over to be sure it's original, etc. If it plays well and you like it then make them an offer. In this economy everyone has room to deal on their price.

Re: Should I buy this Celebrity
Hey 'Guitar Toter', I understand your excitement but also your concern and wish I could help out but the word "NEW" as in 'New Mosrite of California' bothers me. Did Semie change his logo at a given point in time by adding "New"? I'm confused, at any rate. Anyone know more?
Just to illustrate my thoughts here (for the learling -and entertainment), let me say that I was very surprised and even somewhat dismayed when a new "VENTURES" album was released in 1976 titled "Rocky Road - The New Ventures".
I remember feeling very uncomfortable with the title (the word "NEW" added to the band's name) but also with the album's content. It didn't 'taste' like the band I knew...
Don Wilson is quoted in The Ventures Book as saying:
"That Rocky Road album was another of those times when we were embarrassed by our record company. We weren’t doing much at home and disco was in. None of us played on it! I said, 'Well, if you do it, you’re not going to say it’s 'The Ventures'. They asked if they could say it was The New Ventures, and we figured that would be acceptable. I didn’t know for over 20 years that they put our pictures on the inside liner. When record companies do things like that to fool people, we almost feel like we should be suing them."
I can’t vouch for Don or the Ventures but what I’m trying to get at is this: is the logo "New Mosrite of California" just a trick or is it genuinely the property of Semie Moseley/Mosrite or family?
I wish you success but tread carefully, 1200 bucks ain't hogwash!

Re: Should I buy this Celebrity
Veenture, That is a coincidence both Mosrite and The Ventures had "New" In their titles. "The New Mosrite of California" Was an official name though, I've seen pictures of Brass Rail models with the name on it which is rather curious. (Also, coincidentally, Those were also made in 1976) There were some Celebrities made in the early 70s but I don't know how long they were made.
Anyone know when Semie started using the title "The NEW Mosrite of California"? Was it on some stereo 350 models?

The New Mosrite of California post-dated the 350; it was only a '76-'78 thing.

I have to ask whether you really want a twelve string. If you're looking for a Celebrity six string, there are a few to choose from at the moment--all for less than $1,000. Granted, none are "New Mosrite".
