1963 Sidejack Set

Howdy All:

Here is your daily public service announcement. Hyper Guitars, one of the best (and priciest) vintage shops in Tokyo, has just gotten in a pair of '63 sidejacks - guitar and bass! No prices listed, but the photos alone are worth saving to your Mosrite reference material. The guitar is #9, complete with peanut butter brown case, wooden string guide, aluminum Vibramute and Guild knobs. It really doesn't get much better than that. How different is the Tone with a Wooden String Guide instead of Metal??? Also I've often wondered how different is the Tone with the original Vibramute???? I've got an extremely Accurate late 1963 RI from Jonas Ridge, I'll get Photos posted by the weekend.

The string guide regardless of material it is made with shouldn't have any effect on the sound. The strings rest on the metal zero fret. As for the Vibramute versus Moseley vibrato, there shouldn't be any difference in sound there either as the string rest on the metal string posts which is used on both versions. The Vibramute name just 'sounds' cooler.

I'm guessing there may be a difference in tonal color between the earliest aluminum Vibramutes and the more common brass castings, but dubtrub is right that the material of the string guide should have absolutely no effect on sound.

When did the Vibramute change from aluminum to brass? Were only the earliest ones with the big bearings aluminum, or were the ones with the flip mute (as above) also aluminum?

As for tone, I imagine that the one piece bridge is a bit brighter than the roller bridge, but that's based on my experience of bigsby vs/ tune-o-matic bridges, so I could be wrong.

I think the first couple dozen trems were made out of aluminum, up through the earliest Guild Vibramutes with the "Guild" ground off. But I could be wrong. This period of Mosrite history isn't exactly in my wheelhouse.
