Are serial numbers different on doublenecks?

Nice forum. I'm glad I found this one.

I just bought a sunburst double neck, a 6/12 that has different serial numbers stamped at the base of the fingerboard on each neck. One is 2J 405, the other is 2J 40 457. Could this be stock? Any idea of the year? I have not pulled the pots yet, but the seller told me it was 1967 or 1968.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!
Charles

Probably the best way to resource this information is through Tym guitars, here's a link to his serial number guide, but i cant find anything relating to your model! Tim is asking people to give information on serial numbers and guitars at the bottom of his chart so he can post them, this might be a good way of us all getting a decent history/timeline put together?? As per his site;

If anyone has serial number info on Mosrites I'd be interested in talking with you. I am currently collecting numbers, models and years to post on my page. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Just e-mail me. (tim@tymguitars.com.au)

There are many more knowledgeable people on here that I'm sure will have the right answer for you!!!

At least you have one, mine has no serial# anywhere!

Some folks that have been helpful in my quest for knowledge are:

Tim as mentioned above
Deke Dickerson
Bob Shade (Hallmark Guitars)
Buddy Dughi
Bob Kothenbeutel (Bob's local to me here and has probably owned more Mosrites in his day that any other non-Japanese citizen. Just Google up "Mosrite owners list" and you'll see what I mean)

Charles, once Mosrite got under way, it was not uncommon for the necks to have a distance of S/Ns on their necks. We have to remember that they were also making6 and 12 string necks for the SINGLE NECK Joe Maphis Models. When the necks were assigned to the Doubleneck model, the only difference was, that a "2" was stamped on board the last fret. Otherwise, the Serial Number would start with a "J." ;)

Damon, I'm gonna guess at yours, and I'm thinking you have a (Rare Bird) being that she has no S/N, toggle switch is near V and T knobs, "Mistake Plate" around the Vibro-mute Assembly, wooden casings for the pick-ups, etc. Zak had posted a Video of Phil Baugh playing your Doubleneck with the refined updates (now regular factory pieces) on his Doubleneck ;) .

yep it's a rare one.

That's a youtube that's escaped me. Phil seems to have everyone's style down pat.

hey,

I was going to buy an old 66 doubleneck about 3 years ago, but I couldn't get all the money together at the time, but the owner told me (very good vintage guitar dealer) that if a double neck mosrite has different serial numbers then one of the necks are not original. I'm not 100 positive if that's true or not, but i'm passing along the info.
one other thing, is I've talked to tym from tym guitars for years now, he told me that it's common to find mosrites without serial numbers, some guitars were prototypes, sometimes the guitars went out without a serial number simply because they forgot to stamp the guitar!

I have a note out to Brian, and I hope he responds. I think he's the best hope of finding out who "Bobby" might be.

I was thinking:
Bobby Helms?
Bobby Bare?
Bobby Durham?
Bobby Thompson?
