Mosrite Dobro

My name is Dan, I go by Panther.
A friend of mine recently let me barrow his rather road worn Mosrite Dobro. I immediately fell in love with it and wanted one. The only one on Ebay was going for $2195.00. I tried to make a deal with the guy for payments, he agreed but wanted a large portion immediately, which I could not come up with.
Anyhow I asked my friend if he would consider selling me his Dobro. I offered him $1000.00 as it needed the electronics restored and a few other issues. To make a long story short, he said he would take $900.00. I now own the Mostrite below. The photo is AFTER I replaced the missing electronics , knobs etc. and cleaned it up a lot.
I am now a full blown Mosriteaholic.

Welcome to the forum! That is a beautiful Dobro and you got a great deal on it. How do you like it? I've never had the chance to play one or hear one and would love some input on what it sounds like, etc. Also, I'd love to have photos of yours as well as the serial number for my Registry page. Hi Panther, does your serial number have one zero or two zeros before "277"? Do you know if the pots are original inn your guitar? If you haven't checked, there should be a number such as 1346732, for example. It would help me to figure out when it was built if you find the pot code.

Note the photo below, it's either D00277, or DC0277.
Unfortunately the electronics had been removed and both Pups had been wired to a side output jack. I had three choices, Live with it, install a cover plate and second output jack, or try to patch the hole. I chose to add the second output jack.
I made the selector knob, and the top hat control knobs are the closest I could get for under $98.00.

In the second photo, can someone explain the red paint inside the output jack hole. I don't think it was original to the Dobro, but why is the hole red inside ?

thanks for clarifying the serial number. I was curious because you listed the black one as D00002 when I have a photo showing it as D0002.

Now the real question is, is the serial number DC0277 or is it D00027? In my collection of photos I have documented a Dobro with the seril number DC0122 and the second digit looks exactly like yours. It does not appear to be the case where it may have been a zero that was tipped slightly when they smacked it with a hammer, does it?

I've also documented a Dobro with the serial number of D00306 (it belongs to Artie of the forum). I've seen that one up close and personl and it is definately two zeros after the letter D. I have another in my documentation that according to the owner is D00187.

When I look at my examples of Celebrities with the serial number prefix letter "C", it also looks just like what we are seeing (as far as the little gap is concerned) so it seems plausible to me that it is DC. The question of course is, what does "DC" stand for that would depart it from the "D" series.

Have you looked inside the body to see if there was a label? All of the Celebrities had a label on the inside so I'm curious if the Dobros did as well.

As for the side jack, I don't know what to think exactly. I've never seen a Dobro or any other Celebrity model with a side jack. Any of the Mosrite Stereo models had both jack inputs on the control panel. I'm guessing your is not a factory installation. It looks from the photo that the paint around the screw holes that hold the jack plate on has been disturbed. Is that the case? Is it possible that this guitar has been refinished? Have you had the resonators off to see if you have any other clues?
