New Celebrity Owner

Postby seabiskit2002 » Wed May 11, 2011 10:00 am

Hi, I am hoping some of you forum members can weigh in on some questions about the Celebrity I recently purchased. There does not appear to be a serial number or model number on it anywhere but the fretboard. That number is 2 N D. See the pics. There are no other numbers that I can find under the pickups, pots, f-hole, anywhere. I haven't taken the neck off to look there yet but I really don't want to mess with that.

Can anyone help me with the model number and year?
Can anyone tell me the correct length that the tailpice should be? The one on it looks like it was homemade.
Anyone know where to look for a pickguard? It was missing when I bought it.

Hopefully the pics come out.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

I would say this is a 1972 Celebrity-III with a factory 2ND neck. The correct serial number series should be 3c****. I think someone put a "second" neck on it for whatever purpose. The bound neck is proper for a 1972 CE-III as opposed to the earlier CE-III's having unbound necks. The pots, etc. look very clean under the control plate. The pot code that I would look for should have either 134 or 137 for the first three digits. The code should be seven digits altogether. The typical tuners should be the chrome Klusons but these are the "diamond" ones that we see when Semie was donating a guitar to a church, etc. and that happened often.

We don't see the back of this guitar but I would guess that it has the chromed "peanut" plate. All in all, my guess would be that Semie built this one for a church or someone he wished to donate a guitar to, hence the odd number stamped in the fretboard, etc. I'd like to see a photo of the back of the bout and back of the headstock. Also, please look for the pot codes.

Thanks Sarah! I took a couple more photos. Below are thumbnails that should take you to larger pics of the pots and back of the guitar. There are no numbers on the sides of the pots. On tha back is "243 C0159" and 350K. The C may be a G but looks more like C. I find nothing when I look up that code online.
Thanks, Seabiskit2002
