I own a 68 combo and am curious about the different methods used to bolt on necks. 3 bolts or 4 bolts with or without neck plate. Is there a timeline for variations?
evolution or convience?

Dave, my combo has 3 screws with no plate. You can see it on the pics in this thread:
http://www.mosriteforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5225Unfortunately it's also the one that has (friggin) nails on the inside neck attach - they just should have been screws.
So it's important to remember that the neck attach screws on the back of the guitar may not be the only ones and you have to remove the neck pickup to see if yours has inside screws (and hopefully not nails).

My '68 has the typical 4-screw, kidney-shaped neck plate.

FWIW, my Ventures-style bass is a '65 and the neck is attached with 3 screws, no neck plate. It's my understanding that Mosrite did not exactly suffer from an excess of quality control.

My H767 (year?) Combo has 3 screws and no plate. The washers seem to be cracked but still doing the job..if I ever loosened the neck screws the washers would probably fall apart and need replaced.
