Celebrity Grab Bag

Hey All -

I just stumbled across this little piece of Bakersfield's odd history - a Mosrite Celebrity body with a Gruggett neck, Standel tailpiece, Vox knobs and a Hallmark serial number neck plate. Needless to say, when UPS arrived I was a happy camper.





Now, you may ask "Adam, where's the neck pickup?" Well, the full-sized humbucker in the neck position had been covered with black lacquer so I decided to pull it out and clean it, and low and behold...




I know my photography skills are not up to muster, but I'm guessing most of you guitar heroes out there know what that little black decal means. I don't know much about Gibsons, but I'm guessing that one little pickup is worth more than my new Bakersfield partsrite.

Adam, if that "so called little sticker" says "Pat Applied For" I'll give you $1,500 RIGHT NOW, and
you can keep the rest of the guitar, which BTW, I think is a proto "Encor" which Bob Bogle was
already trying to start another guitar company, as well as another Amp Company, as well as a....well...
we'll just stop there...
If it already has a patent Number, I'll pass....

Definitely not a Bob Bogle Encore. An Encore was a swept wing body that was only existed on paper. No prototype was ever made, well,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,with the exception of Bob Halls Hallmark swept wing. But even that was not a true copy.

So, what's the little black sticker?

Danny, I was SHOCKED when I first read the info on the Encor. BTW, It is not the "Encore" spelled with an e at the end, just "Encor." And yes, it too had the Celebrity/Gibson 335/etc Body Style, BUT with the slanted Neck Pick-up. I believe it is EVEN on this Forum.....I know....now I got to go find it to bring it back out to the 'Front Stage.'......I'll start looking...after all, that's
what this FORUM is ALL ABOUT.

I think you guys are thinking of Ed Preager's Epcor guitars. There were 70 built between Joe Hall and Bill Gruggett and they used prefab Italian bodies, not Mosrite Celebrity bodies (which I also believe were prefab). Bob Shade owns a couple and there are pics near the end of the Hallmark Guitars photo gallery.

I think you guys are thinking of Ed Preager's Epcor guitars. There were 70 built between Joe Hall and Bill Gruggett and they used prefab Italian bodies, not Mosrite Celebrity bodies (which I also believe were prefab). Bob Shade owns a couple and there are pics near the end of the Hallmark Guitars photo gallery.

I stand corrected, it was the Epcor, but then I am now confused with Del's Book....

The Ventures proposed the idea for Mosrite to build amplifiers, however Semie wasn’t able to design and produce an amplifier on a large scale in a timely manner. Bogle, having already severed ties with Mosrite Distrubing Company, went in search of a builder and designer to produce his own brand amplifier and located a small electronics company in Conoga Park, a suburb of Los Angeles, CA. This business was operated by an individual known as George Faith. An agreement was made between Bogle and Faith and the name of the amp was to be called the Encore. As a side note, during this process Bogle had designed a swept wing guitar, which was never produced by Bogle, however, it’s design was later (unofficially) adopted and manufactured by Bob Hall to become the Hallmark swept wing guitar.

After taking numerous orders and deposits from music stores all around the country, the Encor amp business disintegrated when Faith absconded with the funds and folded the business before production ever started.

I am not familiar with Ed Preager, only the clown (George Faith) which turned out to be a "scumbag."........

I haven't read the Ventures book, but I have been told there are grievous errors in there in regards to Hallmark.

LOL! Adam, I haven't either. However I already know of some "grevous errors" on the
Mosrite Section alone .
