Re: Sneak preview.....
Great job!!! Semie would be proud of you. If he were here today I bet he would think of hiring you to do paint jobs.

Danny actually did do 'some stuff' for Uncle Semie.....

make the Mos' of it, choose the 'rite stuff.

Re: Sneak preview.....
Hey gang,
Thanks for all the wonderful comments.
Just got back from the Blues jam out at Trout's, so just now responding. I sent a group of photo's of the completed project on to Mel, but apparently he is out of town. I didn't want to post the pix before he had a chance to see it, but, oh well.
Kevin, I first used Jasco paint and varnish stripper, then Acetone to take all the finish off down to bare wood and started from scratch on both the body and neck. Mel can post additional photo's if wants when he returns.
As for painting, some of you are aware that I did work at the Mosrite factory on P street here in Bakersfield for a couple of weeks during the summer of 1966. But the things I picked up from Semie was earlier while looking over his shoulder at his shop in Oildale, Ca. Semie was a pro, I'm just a novice.
Dennis, yeah, I took the photo and I was using zoom. I was trying to show the gloss of the finish.
Ed, I still have a ways to go to compete with yours and Terry's finishes.

Re: Sneak preview.....
Danny, did you get the email from Mel requesting that you send that guitar to me? If not, it was surely lost in the Internet somewhere but you must respect Mel's wishes on this matter.
And quick, before he gets back from wherever he is. Do not delay.

Shucks Jim, it must have just gotten lost in the mail. I guess I'll have to keep the guitar.

I am frickin' stoked about this. I want to thank Danny for taking this guitar to a level that is far beyond my talents, and surpassed anything I could have ever hoped it would be. All along the way with the Partsrite, when I ran into difficulties and challenges, Danny was there with advice to help me get the project finished. There were some points, especially early on, when I feared I had gotten myself in over my head with this project, and so, from start to this fantastic finish, this guitar wouldn't exist without our generous host. Thank you Danny.
Here are the pictures Danny sent:

That is not a flaw in the red right side of the back, it's just a reflection.

Re: Sneak preview.....
Dang. Another nefarious scheme bites the dust.
That is one staggeringly beautiful guitar.
There is something about the combination of a Mosrite's body shape and that type of sunburst that just blows my mind. I was looking at the sunburst on the Celebrity that I have yesterday and I just couldn't believe how pretty it was.
Wonderful job, Danny!!!

Danny has done another wonderful job; this time on Mel's Partsrite. Hmmm... "staggeringly beautiful" ...I have to agree with Jim; Sunburst is my absolute favourite finish too and I never get tired of it
Mel, are you going to rename your Partsrite now "Powerite" or "Staggerite" ?(also because of the 3 staggered pups)...

I think it would be safe to call it a "Done-right"!
To put this in perspective, this is what the guitar started as:

This was as good as I could make it:

Here's a picture of one from the factory:

And here it is "Done-Right". I think this is tops!

Re: Sneak preview.....
Mel, the finish you did looked nice. I read and re-read your adventures building that unit and it was most informative. Your finish was darker, but still most attractive.
Still, the ability to do that type of work is a gift and I know I don't have it. I am in the middle of the first finish touchup I have attempted in the last six years or so-- a half-inch missing chip of lacquer on the back of my '72 Celebrity, and I am absolutely scared to death that I might mess it up.
I have read everything on the Net about how to work with nitrocellulose lacquer and praying I don't bungle this.
One site that I highly recommend is Frank Ford's Frets.com. It is a wonderful site for all things regarding guitars and their upkeep. Frank is also a very nice person.
