I am leaving on a plane the day after tommorow and am concerned that i'll go over my weight limit and thus paying a fortune in excess luggage fees.
Q: what weight do you estimate a mosrite excellent w/mosrite hard case would total?
my limit before i pay excess fees is 23Kg/50.7pounds
i know my amp is 18kg/39.6pounds
how much over do you think i will go?

Maybe this'll help. I think you'll be going over by about 10 lbs.

Mark V in original case = 16.5 lbs.
Black Beauty in period Mosrite case = 24 lbs.
Doubleneck in original case = 24.5 lbs.

Why take an amp you can probably rent or have the backline provided if your playing somewhere.

Personally I'd never play with a rented amp. Who knows what XXXX it's got in it and how bad it will sound? Your own amp guarantees good sound.

Sometimes a situation is unavoidable.
A few years ago our band did a gig in Luxembourg and during one of the evenings towards the close, one of the guy's Chinese Vox AC30 I was playing my lead through, copped out and I was struggling to get my volume back... :( . One time during another gig (in Holland) I didn't get sufficient feedback from a monitor because the sound guys were messing up. I had to depend on the sound coming from the amp which wasn’t on volume 10. Luckily I was playing rhythm so the audience didn't suffer too much but that type of thing can be very frustrating and annoying -no fault of the amp.
Now with your own amp you'll know what you can expect but you never know when Murphy is lurking around...
