Bruno,
I'm guessing that you are referring to the Bassman as being too big in size since
the Bassman was originally only 45-50 watts?? But if you are looking for a 40 watt
Fender amp with decent sounding Reverb and Tremelo with 2 twelves, I'd probably
would be leaning towards a 60s 'Pro Reverb.' ;)
make the Mos' of it, choose the 'rite stuff.

I remember reading that they used brownface Fender Concert amps often in the studio. The "Live in Japan '65" are Showman amps, and the "On Stage" live CD is at least in part done with Guyatone amps (the GA-950 Concert Deluxe model, I think).

I'm a fan for that 60's Ventures sound too and when I was looking for a decent TUBE amp recently, I found myself facing a difficult choice between the Fender Custom Vibrolux Reverb Reissue (40 watts) and the Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb (22 watts). The latter was/is used by so many musicians in the studio because of it's full fat traditional Fender tone at low volumes and it's quite loud actually for gigs but of course it can always be miced* for larger venues and you do have that Vintage Sound.
I chose eventually the former (40 watt amp) because of it's cosmetics and it's a taller amp with tilt-back feature and I fancy the cool white knobs. More importantly it has more power and the two 10-inch speakers provide more headroom, cutting through the mix better). Also this 40 watt baby has the Reverb and Tremelo in BOTH channels, which is cool.

I'd say you made the right choice as the Custom Vibrolux Reverb is based on the brownface Vibroverb, which is closer to the circuit of the brownface Concerts and Showman Amps the Ventures used. Not that the Deluxe Reverb isn't a good amp, just that the scooped mids of the classic blackface Fender sound is different than the earlier Fender circuits.

Mel, you certainly know your stuff...thanks.
Just like to say that to me and many others the Vintage amps (as apposed to the re-issues) are preferable to have for a number of reasons but they're not easy to come by and if you do manage to lay your hands on one the down side is it usually comes at a premium and I'm not even talking about possible repairs and replacements of electronic parts.
The old point to point wiring/soldering though, beats the modern amp with printed circuit board and as I've read somewhere -with inferior or less suitable electronic parts (resistors, capacitors etc.) and transformer. The Vintage Jensen speakers are in a separate class too (much better) than the modern copies ...said one review. These are some of the things to consider too when looking for amps. ;)

I use a POD going into a reverb deluxe or a straight vibrolux rev (with blackface mods) to get the 60s sound. You can hear examples (on Secret Agent Man, Needles and Pins and Apache) under my name (Kanad Ghose) at:
http://planktones.com/PageUFPTV10.html
I set the pod to boost bass, treble and mid cut at about 1/4-th of the way - and use Gibson vintage strings.
Caravan sounds quite good - like the sound you have on the On Stage LP - I can email excerpts or a mp3 if you are interested.
If I were to use the amps directly, I'd stick to a Vibrolux reverb RI.

Kanad, I’m impressed…and I hear you mention Caravan! …I should be so lucky as to be able to play such a difficult piece…and some of the other stuff too for that matter.

Enjoyed your weblink’s pics and tunes (good versions of Apache, Needles and Pins!). Still need to listen to all the others too…Secret Agent Man is next! Thanks! :)
Think I also need to get me summa that Ventures karaoke background stuff to help me get along –heck, must be easier to get than getting three musicians -or more- to have to compliment my solo “disturbances”! :D :D :D

Sorry for a little sidetracking here Bruno but I hope the thread so far has been of help to you as it has been enjoyment to me! ;)

Brownface all the way. The Fender Concert (6g12) is the same as the brown showman (6g14)
except half the power. Same harmonic vibrato and killer brown tone. That would be the first choice I think in the 40Watt range.
I regret not the things i have done, but the gear i did not buy.

ok,I've to make up my mind:
I could find a Vibrolux custom reissue for 800-900 euro
or a Pro-reverb(76) 1600 euro
a 75 Vibrolux at 1600 euro
mmmmmmmmm....the winner is?
everybody at Harmony-central tells all the good of the old ones SF,but they are really expensive and not looking that good by the picture.
Any advise?
