Dennis, Yes, all through the 60's the Mustang was more expensive than the Tele. Shocking but True. AND, beleive it or not, back then the Mustang was more popular than the Tele. In fact, I remember reading that at the time of the sale to CBS, that there was a back-log of over 5000 Mustangs. I think that the Tele really picked up interest in the late 60's and early 70's as all of us beginners gained experience and started to replace those 1st guitars for better things
My sales and priceing history is based on the Richmond, Virginia (Walter D. Moses) - DC area (Chuck Levin Music) area. As late as 1972, Chuck Levin was only asking $275 for the Tele Deluxe.

LOSTVENTURE,
Thanks for the info, I never knew that the "Student Model" Mustang cost more than the Model that put Leo on the Map.
Yeah yeah, I know, it was first called the Broadcaster, than the "No" caster, and then finally the.....???? What was the name of that model again???

make the Mos' of it, choose the 'rite stuff.

Re: 1960s Pricing
There was also the Esquire which was a one pickup model. Speaking of Telecaster names don't you think it would be weird if Fender came out with a guitar called the "Telemaster"?

Re: 1960s Pricing
Hello Dennis,
Just as a matter of fact. I have a lot of mid 60's Fender catalogs, and the Mustang was never advertised as a "beginner's" model. At worst (according to Fender literature) it was considered a guitar for the guitarist on a budget who also wanted a tremelo. Hint, Hint. That was Fender's thinking at the time.
I'm glad to have been playing at the time when all of this history was taking place.

Hey, I'd be glad just to play some guitars at Manny's or go to a few concerts.
