There are three main factors that I feel makes a vintage Mosrite stand out.
1) as mentioned the whole neck 'design'
2) speed-frets
3) the pups
Now that I've had my Maphis for a little while it's perfectly clear to me that the neck is way better than the one I had on my Mosrite Excellent copy which is dead-on in so many other ways. It's perfect for me anyway. Fast and easy to fret.
My Maphis has been refretted. There was no other way around it, I'm afraid - would have kept it original if it were possible.

Re: Mosrite Necks
Speed fret were not a Mosrite invention Les Paul had them availible on a Gibson LP Custom In 1954 . They were his choice of frets before that, thats why the LP Custom were called Fretless Wonders.

Re: Mosrite Necks
Well, Gibson might of introduced those frets in 1954, but that doesn't necessarily mean that no one was using them on their guitars before Gibson......

make the Mos' of it, choose the 'rite stuff.

In 54 Semie was 19 years old hadn't built his 1st guitar yet and you're right Les Paul was using them.

Re: Mosrite Necks
Unfortunately this is an undated photograph in Terry's post, but for the triple neck to be Semie's first guitar he ever built, I would say this crude specimen would indicate an earlier experience or lack of.

The head attachment is quite unique. I'm not sure what that's all about.
No information or time frame accompanied these photos that I could read. They appeared on a Japanese Mosrite forum with text in Japanese.
Japanese text translated by dorkrockrecords.dorkrockrecords wrote:This is a photograph of the first guitar neck Semie Moseley made as a boy.
The head is inlaid with a cross, as well as his own name across the fretboard.
Semie always cherished this neck, and it was laid upon the altar at his funeral.
Of course, this neck is Loretta's pride and joy.
