Nah, even the natural finish ones have this problem. It's just a design flaw with the bolt-on construction, compounded by pretty chintzy bodies. Despite the shortcomings, for a cheap, small-bodied acoustic guitar these things sound HUGE.

I'd love to try one out. Too bad they are so rare, I may not play one for ages.

Yeah, luckily though the crack doesn't affect the sound quality or playability. It's been the same for years without splintering more. They do have a great sound! Bigger than I would've thought. Whenever I've tracked with other acoustics, I spend a lot of time EQing them, but with this one, the sound is so pure...

This is my 1st attempt @ a picture here, so bear with me -this is an acoustic I had several years ago.
It just said model 404 on the label. I sold it to "tym" in Australia. It had the crack problem too, but still played and sounded great. The speed frets were really bizarre on an acoustic.

I've never heard a Mosrite acoustic model. How are they compared to say a Gibson, Guild, Martin, etc? Are they more of a novelty collector item or are they a great sounding and playing acoustic?

I think they could have been in a league with other serious acoustics if Semie had just put a littlle more time & thought into them. The biggest drawback I saw, and I guess I've seen 4 or 5, was the bolt on neck and apparently an inadequate internal bracing system, which led to the chronic cracking problem. I'm sure there were some custom made ones out there that were really good, such as maybe the red, white & blue one he made for Buck Owens. For the most part, I'd say they are kind of in the novelty category --although a very cool novelty to have.
