Mosrite trems and pickup molding???

Postby oipunkguy » Tue Dec 08, 2009 12:27 am

hey guys. I'm starting up my first mosrite project, and I was hoping some of you guys could help me out. I was wondering what's the process of making a handmade trem? Not so much the polishing out the shape, but how do I make the mold to get the basic shape to began with.
I mean I could just buy a MIJ replacement part, but where's the fun in that? ;)
Secondly, I wanted to take my first shot at building a mosrite style pickup, but how do I make the plastic cover? I've read before that Semie made his first pickup covers in his kitchen stove. I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I'd love to hear some of you guys input on this topic. thanks! :D :D :D
I'll post pics when I have made some progress. :)
Cheers,
Aaron

That seems one heck of a challenge Aaron; a lot of 'trial and error' ahead perhaps for beginners, but lots of fun too :)
Good luck with your project!

HELLO
You ask a question that few people believe but is true--Semie Moseley, sometimes with my helep, did form early pickups by heating the sheeting in an oven and using a 2 piece hand made wooden mold we would squeese the hot plastic to shape it--yes trial and error --this was before we found plastic injection molding--
If you are going to do this as we did reserve lots of time for your experimentation but why not do it the easy way ---buy'em ready made??

well I might buy some already made, but I kinda wanted to do it the old fashion way. the way you guys did in the old days. even have an old singer sewing machine I could use to wind pickups if I wanted to lol.
I guess it's the do-it-yourself spirit I have. maybe thats what that saying means, "built in soul" :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

you can also use a hand-drill. i've done it before. it doesn't take as long as one might think once you get the hang of it. if you're only going to make a pickup or two it is definately the most economical way to go.

yeah i thought about that as well. most of the drills I have in my shop has a lot of torque, so they would be less then ideal I would think. But I'm sure I could rig up something. 8-)
