PRE VENTURE-PRE JOE MAPHIS VENTURE MODEL STYLE BODY

Postby EF@MosriteRecords » Wed Dec 16, 2009 8:32 pm

How early? These pictures were sent to me and something told me to call Andy.
I thought I would post it and see what the masses out there say. The inset picture
shows Joe looking over the Guitar. In the picture Joe looks as if this photo was take some time in the early 80's. I do not right off hand know where this photo was taken. I can tell you there were TWO of these made both WHITE for Joe's approval. He was not happy with EGGSHELL WHITE and when the Joe Maphis Model came out, they were as far as I know all SUNBURST. Call them a 59-60-61 etc. If they are, and they ARE pre Joe Maphis Models is there a pre pre example that would, a couple years later be called THE VENTURE MODELS? Check out the knobs.

According to ANDY Joe did not have them long. And he does not remember any Serial Numbers given them. Also one or both may have "CUSTOM" on them. Where ever Joe was when he was photographed handling this one it seems he is looking at a old friend.

OK Gang lets run this one down and sees who knows what.
I love this stuff.

TWO pictures posted

Elaine,

Joe is definitely older in this PIC. However, I believe this pic was taken at a later time of Joe holding his
Original 'Joe Maphis' ('59-'60) single neck which eventually turned into "The Ventures Model" later on.
make the Mos' of it, choose the 'rite stuff.

this is an interesting model. I happen to like the color and would love one like that. Are the pickups rounded on the end? They look different.

The pickups are either Carvin Coils or ones Semie and Andy wound on a Sewing Machine. Really I am not kidding. However these covers are typical of what Semie did.
There were wooden forms that were used to mold the cover material in to shape.
They were heated in the oven (kitchen that is) really. I have a mold picture
from that period. I'll try to locate it and post it.

Thanks Sarah

Elaine,

However, I believe these were not, they look to be Andy and Semie's first molded pickups around '61 - '62?

I'd like to know more about that guitar as well. Thanks for posting that picture. I had seen it before and lost track of it.
Another vote in favor of the "egg shell cream" color. Works real well with the triple binding.
