Re: Mosrite Bass Clone: Project # 4

Haven't been able to work in the shop much lately, but made a little progress the past couple of day's. I started out by mounting the neck to the body in order to line up the location for the pickups, bridge and tail stock.

In this first photo you see the beginning of the bridge base. Fortunately I obtain the string post and screws from Ed Elliot, so that was one less thing to have to fabricate. The base is made from 7/8" channel aluminum. I made a total of four before I was satisfied with everything. I used measurements from an original Mosrite bridge base for all the measurements, but found I needed to modify them slightly to get everything, and especially the strings located at the right distance from the edge of the fretboard. Once everything is done I will polish the bridge and tail piece on a high speed buffer, making it look like chrome.

The tail piece was made from a little heavier gauge aluminum angle stock. I used a piece of walnut for the wood insert.

Here I have drilled the holes for the post anchors an am locating the position of the tail piece. The neck and pickup's are already installed. It's a domino effect going down the line installing the various parts.

Image

Everything is in place. Right after taking this photo I finished mounting the tail piece. Next up, I will mount the tuning keyes and cut out a pickguard. BTW, the bridge post anchors are not pushed all the way down in this pic.

Looking great! As an aside, what kind of buffing/polishing compounds do you use to polish the aluminum?

It's a 2"X2"X12" block of soft metal buffing compund. I purcashed it about 25 years ago at a hardware specialty store and still have more than 3/4 of it.

Now that I think of it, I believe I have seen it at Harbor Freight.

We have numerous friends and relatives coming to my home this weekend and I wanted to have the bass ready to play as many are musicians and no doubt we will have an afternoon of music. As you will see in the photo's the body is in the rough as I have not had time to do the German carve. I should be able to finish shaping the body next week after everyone leaves.

In this photo, I have drawn the outline of the pickguard onto to the 3 ply blank pickguard material. Using the scroll saw, I cut out the shape as close as possible, then finish shaping with a 1 1/2" drum sander mounted in the drill press.

Image

Here we see the bass in the rough form but playable. In making the neck, I set the angle at 2 degrees, which is apparently too much as I had to raise the bridge quite a bit to set the action. Not having a genuine Mosrite bass to examine, I set it the same as my Mosrite clone guitars which is apparently a little too much. I will be dressing the bottom of the neck where it bolts to the body to flatten it to about one degree. I have adjusted the truss rod and set the action, however I have not yet set the intonation. It sounds outstanding with those Ed Elliot Mosrite bass pickups in it and the for a bass, the action is very fast and low.

....and blue it will be.

I already have the silver under base for candy apple and I just received the blue toner pigment the other day. So it's just a matter of mixing it to the right shade.

Anyone have a bridge cover they want to sell?

This looks amazing Danny! I really do want to get this body/neck shape modelled and full scale drawings completed (real simple) so I can provide these in PDF if anyone else wanted to make one. Do you have a copy of the MK1 body (trace) so I can use as a template? I was going to start with a MkII body (as I have one!?) to copy from but wouldnt mind doing the Mk1 too, looks like the bass model has the same body as the guitar??

I could make a full size trace drawing of the templates for the mark 1 and mail them to you. Regarding the Bass and the Mark 1, they have the same overall appearance but the Bass is some what larger.
