white or reifished?

Postby gregsguitars » Tue Feb 09, 2010 11:59 am

I know some or most Mosrite neck ends are weirdly colored ,the most seen is red, this white Mosrite looks as if a different color was in the neck pocket, but it would have been painstakingly time consuming to sand out all the original finish in every nook , cranny and screw hole. I have looked and the guitar appears all white everywhere and anywhere with the exception of the neck pocket area, primer? just a fluke, whadda you think? That doesn't look like primer to me. It could even be from a metal flake finish.

I have a 65 Ventures that was "refinished" at least 3 times. Spent a lot of time carefully removing paint. The neck, pickup and control cavities still had some of the original pearl white finish, which I scraped off in small flakes and saved in a bag. I left enough in the pockets for proof of original color. Neck is natural and pickguard is tortoise.

Try carefully chipping at a spot in one of the cavities, it looks like it was metallic blue from the pictures.

It's hard to know for sure, I mean it's not out of possibility, that the guitar was painted with one color then repainted another inside the factory. The white part would look different inside the neck pocket then the outside too, because the clear yellowing over time would give it a different color.
Nitro Lacquer strips off pretty easy with quick-strip, or any other brand stripper. You can use acetone as well. Also if it was stripped down, it would be quite difficult not to get some stripper on the neck pocket, even if it was taped off, the stamp on the inside would smudge. if it was another color my guess is it would have to have been sanded.
But I do agree, that inside color does look like the metallic blue color mosrite was famous for using.

I see a few problems aside from the Ink Blue in the neck pocket. The white isn't Pearl White and isn't nearly checked or yellowed enough for an original '60s finish. On top of that, the tortoise shell seems much redder than the stuff Mosrite was using in the '60s. Maybe the whole guitar was redone when the pickups were?

I would guess that was a blue guitar, looking at the pocket, also it doesn't look like the "stick",body hanger was used when it was repainted.

The guard is 3 ply which is questionable, the neck pickup was repaired by the new "stick" under the pup in 1970 and the original switch tip is back on the guitar. Thanks.

Neither of those pickups have the foam backing one would expect in '65.

The tortoise shell pickguard is a 4 ply.

One other observation is the wiring harness did not consist of the gray housing, or at least my '63, '65,'66,
and even my '69-'70 (Celebrity I) did not. All they consisted of were just the thin black and white wiring......
make the Mos' of it, choose the 'rite stuff.
