Re: Early 1960s Ampeg Jet J-12 Amp
The only Ampeg amps I've ever played through were a V4 and a Amp like a B15 but with a 12' speaker and a flipout top. The V4 I didn't like the midrange or the rocker switches but the single 12 amp was very nice.

Re: Early 1960s Ampeg Jet J-12 Amp
The early-'70's VT series were real good amps. I borrowed a VT-40 (50 watts, 4-10"s) for my first Nevada lounge gig back in '73. I'd been playing through a giant Kustom with 3-12" Altecs, playing loud rock 'n' roll in clubs, and I went from that into a high-energy, low-volume Nevada lounge act, where we played on a high stage up behind the bar with our amps at about ear-level for the bar patrons, and playing loud enough to be heard past the bar was grounds for getting fired. My Kustom would have gotten me fired before I ever turned it on, so I showed up with the Ampeg, set it on the floor behind me, and if I could hear myself it was too loud--so I set my level to where I could almost hear my guitar under the drums, and we had a good successful run at that gig (Harvey's Wagon Wheel at Lake Tahoe) and return bookings. I guess the amp sounded OK--I could never hear it!
