Austin

The neck plate is cosmetic, not structural, same as the '64s.

Does anyone know the reason this body style was discontinued? I've heard that the neck/body connection is prone to failure, and given how little wood there is under the neck pocket that wouldn't be surprising, but is that actually the case or just hearsay? Or did they not sell because they didn't look enough like the Mark Is? It would explain the switch to the later german carve style.

From my understanding, this design came from Andy. Roughly 150-200 were made from april to june of 1965. As the story goes, Semie discontinued the model because he didn't like it. I think it was as simple as that. I think also the redesigned ventures 2, later mark v, was also a design trying to catch the guitar market as a student model which is why the necks is so much farther into the body. This is all that I've heard and read over the years, but don't take my word for this being the official reason.
I've never heard of an issue with the neck pocket being weak, but typically there's stress cracks at the neck pocket on a lot of the fillmore versions that I've seen.
