That MK II We Ramones Love.

Postby ImNotJohnnyRamone » Tue Mar 30, 2010 5:50 pm

This question has been on my mind for ever! The MKII. Why? Why was it made? Why John use it? Who else used one? Any info?

P.S I never liked CJ as a Ramone but lets get his bass back!

The main reasons Johnny used it was the price, he tricked the guy at Manny's into selling it for $50. It looked cool and NO ONE else was using one. The neck was perfect for barre chords. And it just so happened to create sound when plugged into a Marshall stack that sounded "like energy coming out of the amplifier". He said that in an interview when asked about his tone. He replaced the pickups out of necessity, one burned out and the Fat Strat probably was less noisy when not being played. He modified his backup guitars with one to keep the sound the same. You can hear the difference in their sound from Too Tough To Die till retirement compared to earlier records. The amp choice(Super Lead vs JCM800) and speaker(Greenbacks vs G12T-75's most likely) cabs has a lot to do with it too.

C.J. was a great Ramone, imo. They were getting a little bored on stage & he made them more energetic & more relavent to a younger audience.

As far as the question you ask, I have no idea why Johnny first played a Mosrite, but I'm very glad he did.
In order of purchase:
1) Mosrite Ranger
2) V88
3) Stereo 350
4) Hallmark II in Johnny Blue
5) Danelectro '66
6) Celebrity III
7) Hallmark Gospel
8) Serenade
9) Eastwood 300

History also tells us that Johnny saw that Fred 'Sonic' Smith was playing a Mosrite as well.
1965 Mosrite Ventures II
1966 Mosrite Mark V
1984 Gibson Les Paul
1985 Fender Telecaster

True, and the Ventures. But Johnny was a notorius individualist and wanted a guitar that NO ONE else was using. He succeeded.

I'm sure glad he got a Mosrite otherwise I doubt I'd ever have known about them.
Then I'd have gone through life saying "What's a Mosrite?"
Shudder.
