That's not a serial number. It's more likely that is the social security number of a previous owner.

Ah, a Queenslander. How are the Mosrite sightings up there? I come across a few now and then down here but from what I can see most of them are in QLD or Victoria.

Welcome to the forum. Assuming that the bass is in the US and you'd have to ship it to Australia, you can probably do better. If the bass is already in Australia, it may be worth it, depending on the cost relative to getting a different bass over. While it's hard to know exactly how it was restored, it looks a lot better than I would have expected.

Described as an early model, ...//...and original p/u was rewired by a guy called Hallmark who was apparently a luthier with mosrite.
Would be interested in what you guys think, there seems to be inconsistances with this bass when it comes to dating it.

Welcome aboard Chris, nice to have ya. I think you're probably referring to Joe Hall (of Hallmark Guitars during the mid-sixties) who indeed had worked for Mosrite. If that is true, it may be a step in the direction towards dating it.

I'm looking at a early ventures model that has been well played and has some unusual features like a bridge cover with Mosrite of California on it. I'll try get some pics up of it !

The engraving might have been done by a previous owner who was an engraver perhaps, in view of the engraved and mistakenly claimed 'serial number' as well.
Just a thought
The bass may be suitable for restoration to original specs but collecter's value/status wouldn't increase dramatically and it would cost a lot of dough as well, adding to the rather costly buy as well, IMHO. You could try to bargain with the seller 'though for a friendlier price

Hey Bill, Ive gotta say that mosrite basses are a little hard to come by at that moment up here, I've come accross a few guitars. Whenever I'm in town I always drop in at Tym's guitars in the hope there is one, but to avail as yet. I'm not totally cashed up, I've gone back to study at uni so I'm more in the market for a player rather than one in collectors condition.
